Can anyone here tell me more about the use of foam rollers. I seem to remember an article somewhere about them - use before/after exercise for easing hammies etc. Also where can I get one ? Thanks in advance for your replies/help.

what I've seen is rollers used to adress ITB pain /tightness. Use would be at least daily, perhaps after a gentle warm up, but google it - you're bound to find the answer!

I use one most days for my legs and back, in the evenings after a shower/bath. I find it works for stretching, massaging and relieving sore muscles.

Cannot see any point in using one before a ride, as just cycling easy for several minutes helps loosen everything up.

Purchased mine from Amazon with FOC postage.

I got mine for back/shoulder problems, they are really versatile. I got mine through my physio but you can get them on amazon or eBay etc.

  • We have a few that guests use out in the Pyrenees. They are fantastic.

I have had a few of the actual foam ones but found they kept collapsing and were too big to transport around.

We got these cheap at a cycling show and they are briliant - address both the problems I mentioned above.

  • I made my own foam roller, plastic tubing, foam wrapped round it, encased in gaffer tape. Works a treat.
  • Foam rollers are an amazing piece of kit! The technical name for using them is self myofascial release. They really help to loosen tight muscles after hard workouts and help to prevent adhesions from forming in the muscles, all of which can contribute to an injured cyclist. Knee maltracking, tight hamstrings/backs etc. Loads of info if you google, I use one 3-4 times a week after workouts. You can start with one of the softer ones but once your muscles get used to it you will need a dense one that doesn't deform. Again, amazing piece of kit for preventing injury.
