Bearings, braking surface all shot on my wheels. So Im after some new ones. Any recommendations for a good set of all-round light wheels for a 200lb rider??
I do use Eastons for my TT and they are ideal for that

    200lbs is 'fat bloke' kg.

And ignoramus is not spelt 'ignaramas'.

I'm about the same weight as you, I use PX Model Bs. They're Ok, but mine have not been the strongest - the rear wheel has a big wobble in it and the bearings need replacing. However, as I say, I am a 'fat bloke'.

Weirdly, my much cheaper Shimano WHR500s have been much more robust.

  • I would agree with the comments about the Planet X Model B's. However, I have ridden their AX57s (supposed to be for cyclo-X) for my pothole littered commute and found them to be fairly bombproof. You can get them for £89.95, or thereabouts, delivered to your door!

Mavics are pretty tough also, Aksiums £150 on Merlin. Fulcrum 5's for the same money also. Shimano RS30's have deepish rims so should be tough.

To be honest though I'd pay a bit more and get a set of Mavic Cosmic Elites. A mate of mine is a real wheel breaker and these are the only wheels he's not wrecked!
  • Fulcrum 5.
Yes I am a fan of Fulcrum wheels 8)

If Des hasn't broken his RH500s, Merlin were doing them for £73 a pair, which struck me as remarkable vfm.

At your weight I'd avoid the lightweight factory wheels, you will find them too flexy. Get a decent set of handbuilts.

That's bloody good. I paid £69 for mine, but that was in October 2008, pre-exchange rate collapse.

I had an accident that resulted in a couple of broken spokes in the rear, but, when they were working, I felt that they rolled better than the Model Bs. The Shimano freehub is vastly quieter than the Planet X one. Some people like quiet, some don't.
