Pulling brake lever while wheel is removed

Can pulling the brake lever while the wheel is off cause issues with the brakes? A mate of mine was fiddling with the brakes (pulling the brake lever) while the wheel was removed earlier today and now I can't seem to get the wheel back on. It looks like the disc won't go back between the pads...
Any help much appreciated. We're talking Elixir R brakes on a Boardman Pro if that helps....

Yes, it repsaces the pads closer together. Push the pistons back home with a tyre lever or cloth covered screwdriver, refit wheel and pump brake lever a few times.0

i had that problem on my avid elixer r's on a boardman too i just had to force the pistons apart with a screwdriver now they are perfect again
