anyone know what climbs are involved, anything steep?

Went on the Pennine Challenge event run by the same outfit (I think) from the same sports centre.

Was badly organised, im sure others can vouch that done it. No marshalls, 50% signs missing, no electronic timing etc means I would steer clear this time round. Similar to the slating the jodrell bank sportive got..

I did the Pennine Challenge too, I enjoyed the non urban parts of the route but agree with the above comments regarding lack of marshalls and signs. The signs were put up but removed by local scrotes by the sounds of it.
  • I used to live in Rochdale before moving to Italy. Rode most of the climbs around there as well as riding the old Tour of Lancs race. The biggest climb on the route is Crag Vale. 5 1/2 miles long but not steep. Always reminded me of a continental climb. Longest continous climb in the country. Most of the local chain gangs go up it.

And ironically for the Tour of Lancs, it's in Yorkshire...

I've done two Torelli sportives this year: the Jodrell Bank and Pennine Challenge. I had no problems with the Jodrell Bank (although I understand that others have raised issues regarding parking).

The Pennine Challenge was a nice route, spoiled by a lack of signage in the urban areas. I think the local scrotes certainly had a hand in this, but there were a number of occasions where the signage (while there) seemed to be too far apart. I hate having that nagging feeling that you've taken a wrong turn somewhere, and I got it far too often on this ride.

I also felt that at the course would have benefited from a marshal at one point (a sharp right turn at the end of the Delph descent). Quite a few overshot the turning.

On the other hand, the marshals manning the feed stations were fantastic. Very helpful and encouraging.

I might not be the quickest cyclist around, but I thought I'd got to Holme Moss summit at a reasonable hour, so was disappointed to discover subsequently that the photographer wasn't there. A quick reccie of the photo gallery suggests quite a few others missed out on that photo-op (although I must concede that he was certainly in place at the earlier camera point).

One final bad point: the food at both events left a lot to be desired. I was convinced I was getting free hot food at the Jodrell Bank, but ended up having to cough up extra at the end. The Pennine Challenge was even worse: a cheese salad in a tupperware container. At least it was free. I see that there's no promise of hot food this time around.

Despite all this (and possibly because I know precisely what I'm letting myself in for, organisation-wise) I'm still seriously considering doing this sportive. I shall await my sweaty cheese slice with baited breath...
