does anyone know either where i can find a route planner that gives suitable routes for bikes or a route that obviously avoids major roads?

Well i use google maps, it isnt bike specific but you can drag your route away from major roads and it gives you your distance as well, i use it when planning routes...seems to work ok for what i'm after.0

Depending on how major the roads are that you want to avoid I would go
Central London, Wimbledon, Epsom, Headley, Burford Bridge (bottom of Box Hill), Ranmore, Clandon, Guildford, Godalming, Midhurst, Petersfield and then down to Portsmouth via the smaller roads. In essence you keep to the left hand side of the A3 (mostly within a mile or two) until you reach Portsmouth. About 70-75 miles in total I reckon.0 -
