Sheffield Riding - what's a 'trail'?

Hi,

I've recently relocated to Sheffield (for work purposes) and was planning to start getting the train to the peaks (looks a tad too far to ride there on a map).

There are cycle routes shown but what's the difference between that and a trail? Are trails custom made for xc? I know there's a forest about 3 miles away (the name escapes me) so may start going there a bit before the peaks.

Some paths marked on maps cannot be ridden - however some like the TPT are open to various forms of transport.

The bike trails in Wharncliffe woods are crafted for a challenging ride.

Cheers - yeah, that's where i'll be going first as it's not too far from Shef City Centre.

Will let you know when I get to bike to see which trails you recommend.
