threaded fork steerer to a-head

I can't find much info on this topic so I thought I'd pick your collective brains..

If I have a threaded 1" fork with a steerer which is much longer than required (ie. taken from an XL frame and installing it on an XS frame) can I clamp a 1" a-head style stem onto the steerer (below the threaded portion) and replace the headset with a 1" a-head (and use star fangled nut)??!

your help is appreciated..

    As has been said, yes. I did just this earlier this year, infact I used a shim to accomodate a 1 1/8th stem. Worked fine all summer.

    You might crush the steerer of the forks, particularly if the forks are lightweight. Ahead forks have a much thicker wall. It will work but be careful when tightening the clamp bolts up, another issue you might come across is the SFN being too small for the ID of the forks, it will grip but not as well as ahead forks.
    I've added a signature to prove it is still possible.

    is it viable to use a fork bung as done with fragile carbon steerers?
