Hi there

I'm currently using my Kona Cindercone with slicks tyres to commute 12.5 miles. Can anyone tell me what is the largest size chainring I can use to spped things up a bit. It currently has a 44 t ring.

I appreciate this post dangles a leg over the fence separating MTB and Commuting forums but would appreciate any advice.

Thanks

Depends on your front mech. And your rear if you don't change the other chainrings due to capacity reasons (though this can be overcome).

Also the chainset and the BCD and pattern.

Have to look at the parts you have and the specs and compare to new stuff.

44 is ok for commuting. Fit a 9-speed 13-23 cassette for very close ratios.

On the straight i would normally use a 44/16 gear, so that still leaves 3 higher ones.

You will easily spin out downhil though on the 44/13 top gear, so also consider a 12-23 cassette. However, you lose the 18 sprocket with that cassette!

If he already has a 44/11, then a sub of 12 or 13 will not give any higher gears. 13-23 closer together, but a lower top gear.
