Does any one have experience with these while racing? I have heard of problems accidently shifting while climbing. Is it more of a hindrence than a help?

it's like anything ,you just get used to using them ,sorry to be glib ! The're much lighter than anything else ,cheaper and dead easy to replace cables on ,as well as having less clutter on your bars .xo twisters are fab ,it's just a bit strange with the "notchy" changing ,but great to feather on front mech to avoid chain rub on rings .
