A singlespeed still has a freewheel.
On a fixed-gear bike, if you pedal backwards the bike will go backwards.
On a singlespeed, if you pedal backwards nothing will happen (like a normal bike with gears).0 -
Singlespeed has a freewheel, fixed doesn't.
You can have a fixed with gears, though it's unusual at the moment.

Still getting used to mine, it is superb fun though!
Fixed gear, is the one with the rider going down the steep hill looking a bit worried, pedalling furiously but braking quite often. If anyone reading this is behind me in a car, I apologize in advance. Ascents are a doddle - descents...a bit scary. Also had a bit of a moment the first time I stood up and stopped pedalling to go over a sleeping policeman.
Fixed is supposed to give you a better pedalling action at high cadence. It can be a bit relentless though...0
