Cadel Evans will not be in the Silence-Lotto team competing in the Tour of Spain (Vuelta a Espana), starting on August 30 at Granada, the team has announced.

The Belgium-based outfit has left Evans out of the Vuelta, which finishes on September 21 in Madrid, but will still have an Australian among their ranks in Matthew Lloyd.

The 31-year-old, who injured his knee in the aftermath of finishing second overall in the Tour de France at the end of July, finished 15th in the road race and fifth in the individual time trial at the Beijing Olympics.

In the 2007 Vuelta, won by Russia's Denis Menchov, he finished fourth. Evans is being replaced by fellow Australian Matthew Lloyd.

What a shame I was looking forward to seeing him get dropped on the first hill.
