Hi everyone,

Im new to this site, so please excuse me if this is posted in the wrong section.

I have decided to get a new Hybrid through my cycle to work scheme and im looking for any opinions on the following bikes. Its mainly for weekend rides, but eventually might attempt to commute, although its about 22 miles one way and with no decent route in.

Im quite new to the whole bike thing, so any advice greatly received.

Specialized Globe Elite with 8 speed hub

Scott Sub 20 Classic

    Hiya,

I am in the same position as you are , and noticed that you haven't had any responses. I put up a similar thread, and from what people are telling me, you are probably better of getting a road/touring bike.

Check out my thread to see what I mean.

I've got a Specialised Crossroads, which was the model before the Globe if I am correct. I went for a standard 24 speed setup, which has a quite small bottom gear which is great for crawling up steep hills with slower riders on family rides.

I am using mine on a 17 mile each way commute at the minute, and it performs fine, the roads are not the smoothest, and it's not the quickest bike on the road, but for a general purpose bike it's quite useful.

I have managed to get my average commute time under an hour now, so it's not too bad, but a lighter road bike would certainly make it a quicker commute.

I've taken mine throught forest trails etc, and the 700cx38 tyres are certainly alright for general rough terrain, but not quite up to mountain bike standards.

I think the usual rule applies with Hybrids, they are a jack off all trades, but master of none.

i bought a Cinelli Bootleg Hoy Hoy Rats last year and really like it.I upgraded the brakes to Avid Ultimate as the stock ones were a bit soft.Has a nice "stealth" matt black finish and handles well in traffic. Its also very light and has lots of eyelets for racks ...etc

    Thanks everyone.

After a chat with a guy at work who knows his bikes, i have decided to go for this Scott:

Hopefully the benefits of a more road based bike, but without the uncomfortable position.

I might once my fitness builds up start commuting, so this seems a decent compromise as I still have a hardtail for fun at home.
