Gear cable routing question

Why do some bikes have the gear cables coming out of the side of the levers and others under the handlebar tape? I guess those little dimples on the side of my Centaur levers are for routing on the outside?

It depends whether you have Campag/SRAM or Shimano, the first route under the tape shimano doesn't.

Only Shimano STIs feature external gear cable routing - Campagnolo and SRAM have it under the tape - even the new DuraAce feature internal routing. The dimples on your lever hoods are designed for the buttons for an Ergobrain computer - when fitted to Chorus and Record levers
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
