Hi,

I'm new to mountain biking and i have recently been given a new mountain bike for Christmas with a view to start riding. I have had an issue with the back brakes. They are "V" brakes. When pulling the back brake it obviously brakes but when releasing the brake, the cable does not spring back fully and the brake still stays lightly touching the wheel rim. Can you advise? I'm probably better getting disc brakes but I want to start somewhere.

sounds like dirt/rust in the cable, of you need to add tension to the return springs. a small screw by the pivot on each brake lever. More info on Parktools.

Are the pads touching the tyre slightly? If so readjust the pads so they don't.

Is the cable sticky (doesn't move freely)? If so a few drops of oil down the outer cable will help.
