Botton Brackets
If square taper BB e.g. UN51 are so strong, why is it that people still go for Octalink cranksets?
Just a thought...

the bearings are ok but the interface and the axel not to good.
for general XC type they are fine (and comuting) but for XC race too heavy, for any extrem use too weak etc.
and haveing a distortion mounting system? every time the crank set is removed and mounted it is in a diferent position.

Ah right.
So would an Octalink BB be stronger?

I would argue that ISIS and Octalink are stronger without a doubt0

but ISIS bearings dont seem to last as well as Octalink.
External bearing are better again. HT2 and X drive?

I think it depends Nick under what conditions you are using them in all honesty but it would appear to be the case as you state0

I've heard a few bad things said about ISIS.
The reason I ask is because I have killed another powerspline BB, so rather than just replace the BB I'm thinking about going for the whole lot, as I have killed a couple of powerspline ones. Being a big guy I want the strongest one I can get (money permitting)

go LX HT2 or Hone HT2. both the same except for colour. external bearings sorted. just get the bb shell faced.

ISIS is terrible, yes the splines may be strong but the bearing go in minutes. Octalink not much better
Square taper is fine unless you are very hard on your bike, the bearings last ages (especially if you use the shimano cartriges), they are cheap and there is a huge range of chainsets for them
Hollowtech also works very very well. Strong, light, bearings seem to last a long time and are dead easy to replace. Probably the easiest to service as well
