How many of you put spacers above your stem and what are your reasons for doing so[?]

i dont have any spacers above my stem, you can leave some spacers above the stem when fitting new forks so that you can change the height you have the stem at eg higher or lower by moving move spacers above or below the stem,[;)] i think that all if i missed somthing please let me know[;)]

Well you didn't miss anything but the reason why i do is 1 so i can change the height of my stem on my new bikes untill i get it right, also so you don't have to cut the steerer down to much.

I have quite a few but I like a more upright riding position. I also have a flat stem so its possibly the same as one or two spacers with a rising stem. As tom says though, if you have spacers it allows you to experiment with the stem position and once you find a comfortable position you can then cut the fork steerer down to the required height (don't forget to adjust the star fangled nut as well).

Plus it helps having as long a steerer as poss if you decide to sell your forks

I have one above cause i cut the fork steerer too long and i can't be bother to cut it down. Also stem might be changing so trying to keep max lenght as poss.

Yeah that's what I thought (selling on later and initial experimentation) but was curious if there were other reasons. Gungun, I saw your handjob pics and that's what got me thinking.

I have 10mm of spacers under my stem.
Why? My bike initially came with that amount, and each time Ive fitted a new fork (twice now) Ive just cut it the same length. No other reason really.

I put them below the stem 'cos spacers above it looks stoopid [;)]

Minimole, I'm no so sure. I thought it would look daft to keep it that way but I saw gunguns handjob and I think it looks good! But maybe that's because they're pimped in Gold???

For me it means for off road I can mov the stem up and have a more upright seat and for on road stuff I can drop the stem to get further forward and lower

I did have one aboove the stem, but eventially I ground about 5mm off the top and dispensed with the spacer.

Longer steerers attract a higher resale value, and good if you swap the fork to a longer headtubed bike.

Exactly why I now do it too. If you've got a really small Headtube then re-selling your forks after you've cut them is a right ball ache, I learnt that the hard way......
