I wonder how history will judge Blair. There was some good things, but man isn't that going to be long forgotten and over shadowed by the war in Iraq.

Is it a better Britain now than 10 years ago?

Who's the new prime minister. I'm assuming its either Fozzy or Sonic as they both gone absent recently. Why have all leading polititians been so boring recently, we need someone interesting to make parliment less dull.

  • I hope history treats Blair kindly, he might've made a few mistakes but in all I think he did a grand job. I wouldn't imagine it's easy trying to run the country - you can only please some of the folk some of the time.

Same old crap, just a different face doing it, which funnily enough sums up my feelings on polticians in general

Well Frankie, I can't really disagree on those points.

However would any of the available alternatives, during the last decade, have been any better?

The upside has been: high employment, economic growth, stable interest rates, more money into the public sector (though not necassarily well used).

Cazz's point is correct: get it 90% right and people will complain about the other 10%.

I'm not a particular fan of Blair - but on the whole he ain't been (too) bad, though the smugness and constant spin has become very wearing

I agree with your positive points Al but i think your ratios are wrong, I'm not the type to complain about the 10% i think the 'bad' stuff he has done is the 90%, partly because it has global consequences. The good stuff he has done, it is a short list and one of them is qualified, is small potatoes to his greater wrongs.

  • I think Tony Blair has done a fairly good job.

Afghanistan was justified, but I think the armed forces were maybe just a bit too quick to pull out, and they're paying the price for it now.
Iraq, I agree with the fact that Saddam needed removed from power, but the justification given was totally wrong. WMD was a load of rubbish, and it's blatantly obvious the yanks just wanted the oil.

As for at home, the NHS has never recovered from the tories. There's still too many cheifs, and not enough indians, but it's not quite so easy getting management to pay of management, than it is to quietly reduce frontline staff numbers. Everybody is too interested in having reports about this or that, than actually putting the money in to patient care.
The biggest issue, is nobody likes to make a decision, and stick by it. Make one mistake, and the press hound that person until they eventually give up and resign, or get pushed. Then the whole shambles is left for somebody else to try and pick up the pieces, and just as they seem to be getting things sorted out, some crisis comes along and their hounded out.
Then there's those people out just to change things for the sake of it. If a system works, somebody has got to change it. The whole doctor training fiasco is a prime example.

But provided it's the public purse paying for these ****-ups, and the concerned people still get there golden handshakes and big pensions, they're not worried.

So is Brown more left-wing than his predecessor? I'm not too sure given his financial 'prudence'
Or are we to expect more of the same?
I ask because last time I bothered voting, all the parties/candidates were pretty much singing from the same hymn sheet IMO. All trying to woo middle England. And no Loony party to vote for either (apart from the <s>Tony's</s> Tory's that is)

apologies if I sound like a hardened trade unionist ;-)
