Chainset Size Question

Hi all,
Ok after weeks of mucking around with my chainset, trying to make it work, i've finally figured out that its a different design to the original part.
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/8316/img8570vr9.jpg
They are both 19.5mm through the square fixing but the chainline is wrong because the one of the right (replacment) has the first ring much further away from the end of the square hole.
Is my orignal part wierd or is the replacment a strange size?
Thanks, Ryan

The original is off a GT Avalanche 3.0 '06 and I think its a Suntour XCT-252.
I've had a look on their site and can't find it but it looks like the CW-XCC150-PB

The replacment I got off eBay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110135205571
I can't see it on the SunTour site though. I wasn't aware that chainsets came with this different ring spacing so just went by the similar look.

sorry dont have the time to search through all their cranks to find out which it is and what axle length it should have. But PFF is not the crank identifier it stands for Power Flow Forward and cover a LOT of cranks.
LBS time and they can suplly a new bb.

Yep. gonna need a new BB with a shorter axle. Measure the difference in thickness of the new chainset V the old, times it by 2 and take that off the old BB width to get the new width you need

I'd rather just get a new cheap (<œ30) crankset than put a new square BB in and then get something decent in the future.
I've been looking at manufacturers and retailers sites and most state just 'square' for compatiablity and no sizes. It seems everyone thinks they are all compatiable and i'm finding they're not.
I've measured the total length of exposed spindle (hope this is right) and it is about 31mm. Has anyone got any advice how I now find a suitable crankset?
My LBS has recently closed and i'd rather not have to take my bike 15 miles to halfords for them to have a look.

a new bb will only be 10-15 quid.
measure you current axel length. and i will have a looky tonite.

I now know I need a chainset compatiable with a 121mm square spindle. Next problem, they don't seem to exist! Has anyone ever seen them or should I just give up and get a new bottom bracket?0
