Biking in Austria...

Hi all,

Im hoping to head out to Austria with my brother, and possibly a couple mates, at the end of August, for about a week.

One problem, we really dont know where to go...
There seems to be quite a few lift accessed (thats a must!) resorts/bikeparks, Saalbach, Leogang, Wagrain, and then a lot of the smaller places.

Im basically looking for somewhere with a variety of trails.
My brother is basically a biking beginner, so some fun fast singletrack, without too much airtime would be great to 'break him in'. Id like to try some proper DH runs, mild north-shore style stuff/free-ride etc.
Stuff like dirtjumps/foam pit would be awesome too.

So yeah, a bit of everything is what we're lookin for.

We will most likely go with a package deal, so somewhere were there are a number of operators to choose from is preferable too.

Not looking for fancy 5star accomadtation, but qould like something a bit better than a youth hostel. Im not personlly fussed about night life or whatever (being 16...), but my brother/mates may be...

Oh yeah, close to a 'major' airport would be good [:)]

So yeah, any thoughts on where would be a good place to head to?

Current favorite is Saalbach as it seems a decent biking destination, has an indoor hall with foam pit etc, and is fairly close to Salzburg airport.

Any input would be appreciated [:D]

Ta, Duane [:)]

your best bet might be to try someone like crystal active (who do saalbaach I believe - full board hotel)the flights and accomodation may work out cheaper then trying to get it done yourself as Salzburg got few non charter flights going to it and august is high season for lakes and mountains.

I think that you will have more choice in France or Switzerland though for what you want.

  • Thanks for the replies everyone.

We are limited to Austria becuase we are hoping to visit Vienna first, and dont want to be lugging bikes around (Ill most likely take mine).

Papasmurf, thanks, I have been looking on thier site a fair bit after reading you used them last trip. I just sent them an email, and it seems that Saalbach is a good place to.
Howe did you find CystalActive? Thier service and whatnot. Did the staff speak English?
You said that the hire bikes they provide were naff, but on thier site it says you can get Spesh Enduro Experts...?

Oh yeah, can you get by in Austria with just speaking English?

the reason we used them is they had a web special on and it was far cheaper to use them then sort out flights, transfer and hotel independantly. To be fair the staff were good (all english in the club hotels). Yes the brochure says enduros, but as we all know they've been particulay hard to get hold off. We went basically the 2nd week of the season so new bikes might come in, but again its more a matter of how well they are maintained, we found 1 guy was reallly good and another poor.

In general though crystal active were okay and doing some of the other activities they offer is a nice way to have a break from riding, but still do something.

everyone speaks English out there, and its surprisingly cheap for stuff like beer and food or having lunch up the mountain.
