Gear Cable Fitting Help.....
While cleaning my bike earlier i noticed that the gear cable after it passes the clamp on the rear mech has started to fray, which is a bit poor after only 300 miles. As i don't want the cable to snap while i am out and about i am going to change it, but this is something i have not done before but want to have a crack at. Am i assuming that i just get a length of gear cable and housing, cut it to length and just swop it for the original?....or am i over simplifying things and theres something i am missing?
Treat me like an idiot as i am doing this stuff for the first time[;)]

You don't need the casing (or "outer") you can use your existing one. You just need a new "inner" cable. Thread it through your existing outers and cut off the surplus. It will be a good idea to get a crimp on the end too to stop the cable from fraying again.

err this is the free end after the mech that does nothing?
leave it. it does not hinder anything. normally they stay nice for a few rides but a few twigs, grass or rocks can soon cause it to look bad. but it will keep on working fine.

Or dollop a blob of superglue on the end.

Totally non funcional at that point, so tape it up or cut it off or just ignore. Dont need to replace cable unless your a perfectionist

as the Mad one said. it dose nothing there. replace when you have too ie. rusted, worn out, broken.
But if you are going on a day trip take a spare. but as long as you dont play with it it will last fine.
