Changing Stem

Sorry if this is a stupid question, just looking into a new stem. When I purchase is the fitting as simple as removing the top cap and the bolts around the steerer tube and then popping the new one on, i.e by removing the top cap I'm not affecting anything else.
Cheers In advance

well yes you are as the top cap preloads the headset bearings. Also you may need to add or remove some spacers.
have a read of parktools before doing anything.

yeah, one of the simples jobs you could do [;)]. Just undo the Top cap and the Bolts like you said, Undo the bars, Slide stem back on, put bars back on... Although the Stem may be a bit stiff at first...

GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc0 -
if its stiff then you've either put it together incorrectly and trapped a seal, or tightened up the preload and potentially damaged the bearings and/or bearing cups (if you're using ball or caged bearings)

Er so am I going to mess anything up by doing this then

Andy mate, you shouldn't have a problem with this at all, read Park tools as nicklouse advised and Robert's your fathers brother. The only real problem you'll have is if you overload the bearings by tightening the top cap bolt to much, it only needs to be tight enough to stop any play, after that's sorted you can then tighten up the bolts on the stem.
Drop me a line when you're back to your normal stem and bars as I have a Spesh 90mm stem and OS Spesh riser bar with your name on it if you want it from my Stumpy expert.

I'm not that useless (I hope not any way)
Mark, cheers for that, probably just me worrying too much and again many thanks for the offer of the stem and bars, you are a true star.

Preloading the headset bearings...
once the new stem is on loosely do up the stem bolts & tighten the topcap just enough to stop any play in the headset then tighten the stem bolts up & job done!

Do you have any spare headset spacers? as the stack height of the new stem may be different & you may have to add another spacer to get the right height (you need 3-5mm of stem over the steerer tube, if that makes sense!)
I have 2 stem's I'm not using, what stems are you looking at?

That makes sense, I think I have some, just in case.
currently looking at the Azonic world force shorty at CRC its the only one I can find that offers more than a 10 deg rise, had one on a previous bike so I know what they are like

Mate, try Halfords, they'll probably have stems for hybrids with a 20 degree or adjustable rise, might not be cool but it'll be cheap and could help slowly get you back to your normal position.
The Family0 -
On One offer stems with more than 10deg rise, I have an 80mm 10deg '05 one, very nice bit of kit, light too!
