Reign test ride

Finally been out for a few hours on the Reign 1 I borrowed from work and...... I don't like it.

I couldn't get used to having a bouncy rear end on the bike, and the rear triangle was flexing from side to side on big bumps meaning it kept trying to wash out. The Fox forks were flexy too, so I didn't feel as confident or secure as I do on my HT, especially at speed. And I know the terrain and the conditions I was riding in so it's not like I was deliberately choosing bouncy lines, I was taking the same lines I normally do. All in all, quite disappointed with it. Oh well.... means I have to settle for a road bike

[:o][:o][:o] i know what you mean about the forks thats why i have pikes. But the rear end flexes? no chance it as stuff as i rock, and yes full sussers do bounce up and down did you not find pro pedal and setting 3 that almost locks it out?

Almost, but with 14 1/2 stone on the shock it still bounced. If I was going to spend that sort of cash I think I'd buy a Ti HT frame, decent forks and transfer the rest of my kit.

I just didn't feel as good as I do on my own bike, so will be sticking to a HT for now. More than likely I just haven't got the ability to justify a full suss yet.

i know what you mean i've had a few full suss demo's now and don't think i'll bother think i'll get a cove handjob and spend the rest on trick kit.

I can sort of see what your saying. My full susser does not feel as natural as my hardtail but thats just because i haven't rode it much. I supose you are heavier than me so it will bob and flex more. You don't like it cause you haven't got teh skills [;)] if you rode it more you would like it [:D]

first Off did you take the time to set the shock up for you? and the fork?

makes the biggest difference.

and is the reason we dont allow fullys to be taken on a test ride unless booked. it gives us half a chance of getting them set up right.

but yes the first fully ride can be odd. abit like my first ride on a 5th elephant shock when they first came out. i thought it was bust as the rear did not move.

That is so true. The first few rides are feeling abit funny on my reign but am sure it will get better well thats what my hardtail did.

I set the rear shock slightly harder than recommended for my weight as I had 3" of sag at the recommended pressure. The forks performed well, but were just to flexy for my liking. I will be taking a Trance out at some point soon, but just for the experience. I've felt secure and comfortable on my HT no matter what I've been doing in the past. Maybe I'm just biased cos I'm used to a more stretched riding position on a Trail/XC bike rather than the almost upright stance on the Reign, but I'll happily stick to my HT and buy a road bike for when local trails are TOO muddy

Where did you get sugested pressures from i haven't seen any anywhere on or in the instructio9n for my frame? Well i supose its personal choise.

Suggested pressures came from Fox in one of the store's trade catalogues.

Nick.... the Chilters are notoriously muddy, and very slow drying

Fair enough but all the different linkages will need different pressures thats probs why you had to much sag.

Sag was fine at my adjusted pressure, just didn't like the ride. Was too much travel for what I put it through for the majority of the ride though

Isn't the Reign a 6" susser? Like you said it could well have been overkill for your usual trails.

You might find the Trance a better option as it's more xc orientated.

Yeah, Reign is 6". I had intended to do the 4X and DH runs at Aston Hill yesterday, but is was soaking, I was knackered and I had to install a phone line for multiroom

I sometimes ride my mate's Spesh Enduro,and like you say a 6" travel bike is too much for most of the riding to be found locally.

I always think the Enduro feels like the bike equivalent of an armchair.[:D]

But it won't take a hammering like the Trance (or Meta 5, Orange 5) nor will it take a long fork: 80/85mm best, 100mm okay(ish) IMHO.

Going to Aston Hill Thursday evening after work, then again Sunday. I can't use the weather as an excuse anymore.... have to get to know the place now I work for the shop that owns it. The wet chalk isn't nice, as I found out on the Reign yesterday. The wet roots are even worse! Wendover needs some decent drainage

The tyres that come on most bikes are a bunch of tosh though. No matter what bike I buy in the future I'll instantly change the tyres for Conti purely cos I've been so impressed with mine

The bike is good. Still trying to get it dailed perfectly as currently it is a little easy to almost bottom teh chock out with teh corrct sag. Which i don't understand :? I prefer the pike as it has teh 20mm maxel so is alot stiffer than the fox float 32. And i got teh added bonus of making it myself

I love the Reign and it's definitely on the list of bikes I'll be considering when I get a hardcore full susser. I might fit a slightly tougher fork like a Pike, All Mountain 1 SL or Z1, so I can push my own limits without fear of kit breakage though.

Yeh i just read somewhere that although giant only say you alowed to fit a 150mm fork. A 160mm one will be fine. I was well gutted along with seeing the new 2008 marz stuff
