Freewheeling problems - please help

encountered a problem on last weekend's ride round Follow The Dog at Cannock Chase.

My bike will not freewheel correctly, when I do freewheel the chain becomes slack and clanks about the place. Whne I re-commence peddaling again, I have to first catch up with the slack before and power is transfered to the wheels.

Also, if I am standng off the baike and pushing it, the pedals should stay still. But the do not, they rotate forwards.

Any help as to where I should start to fix this problem would be appreciated

How clean is the drivetrain?
Sounds like the freewheel is sticky.... any trees stuck in there?

Your freehub's had it.

A new freehub body should cost between œ12-20 , The Freehub body is the part of your hub where your cassette cogs slide onto to. It's a simple job to replace one.

yeah service your Freehub! The clicky thing on the back wheel, or in your case the not clicking thing.

cheers guys, never done much mtb repairs but I have found a good guide and I am generally quite handy at these things.

It is a Shimano FH btw
