Advice on front suspension

Hi i am just about to buy a new bike for around the œ300 mark and and i want to be able to adjust the front shocks for commuting but i am a little confused on the terminology. I have read the terms "w/lockout" and "preload adjustment" but i am not sure what they mean.

I want to be able to stiffen the shocks for speed on the roads to and from work and be able to have the full travel for some off road on the weekends. Can anyone advise? One of the bikes that i am looking at is the GIANT Yukon but it just says 100mm of travel, and some other bikes with suntour XCR say pre load adjustment. The suntour web site isn't that helpfull because there are lots of different XCR's that do different things.

Thanks for any help!

Lockout means that you can make the forks rigid, so they don't sap your power on the road.

Pre-load - effectively adjust how hard the forks feel.

Rebound - adjusts how quickly the forks extend after being compressed.

Damping - prevents your fork being a pogo stick and bouncing your bike all over the place.
  • Excellent thanks, could i use preload and get the forks very stiff but still have some play for the big bumps? Or will they only go so stiff and i would be better with lock out?
