Dropped the Marin at the LBS on Saturday to get it serviced, but with such a lovely and muddy day yesterday I couldn't resist going out and took the GT for a spin in the dirt [:D].

I thought it would feel cheap and heavy, being used to the Marin now, but it was sitting on the saddle and instantly remembering why I loved it so much in the first place. It obviously is heavier than the Eldridge Grade, and it doesn't shift or brake so well, but the riding position fills you with confidence, the fork is smooth, and the frame is surprisingly forgiving. Summarising, I spent 4 hours and some 30 miles playing around in the woods and mud, going up and down hills, and remembering the good ol' times. Maybe I didn't need a new bike after all...

You guys miss your old bike sometimes?

I DO NOT miss my old Scott Voltage, although I do feel a little sad when I see it at my stepdad's with an old man's saddle and panier rack.

Yep yer b4stards, but you went TO and Avalanche, I come FROM an Avalanche! If they still did the œ1000 jobbie I would have gotten that one instead of the Marin, but I felt like a four figure bike [:D] (All the gear, no idea...).

Still, I am happy with my current bike, don't take me wrong. It is a little nervous, but very, very quick in the flat.

I loved my old bike to bits, a 1990 GT Zaskar. Bought a 2007 Kona Cindercone at the end of last year to replace it. finally sold it tonight to make space in the garage (her idea, not mine) [V]

i spent 15 years riding the GT, and although the Kona is a massive leap forward in every respect, it will never be the same. the old fashioned geometry, and amount of work needed to bring the GT up to date meant ut just didn't make sense to spend a whole heap of cash when i could get something shiney and new.

i decided to keep it to use as a town runaround, less likely to get nicked etc, but spend all my time on the Kona - i guess the GT had sentimental value [V][V][V]

I do kind of miss the Kona (though not the gripshift) but the Anthem is better in every respect.

I think it's just nostalgia for your first mountain bike

The only bikes I miss out of the 14 or so I have owned (since birth!)...

a British Eagle road bike with 453 tubing & 105 gears & brakes, must have been about 14 or 15 when I had that...

a Scott Peak MTB, rigid, steel frame, nimble as hell and so much fun (sold to mate 3 years ago, his dad now owns it).

My FSR's front end has exploded in a mass of expensive repair bills at the moment. So I'm back to my Hardrock. The RST fork has siezed (rigid rules) and I upgraded it with some X9 after the rear mech exploded last year. Its a crazy horse that's for sure! I was being bucked all over the shop but had great fun! Makes you love you FS bike all the more though.

I definitely don't miss my old bike (Carrera 'Optima') As the '06 XTC SX does everything I want in a bike, apart from cushion landings from dropoffs and jumps (see my pics). New forks may be on the cards in the future!

May turn the Optima into my commuter hack as I'm getting fed up with changing the tyres on the XTC from slicks in the week to nobblies at weekends.

HELL NO!!, i went from my ht mongoose ald pro to a new enduro, gave the mongoose to my mate who comes out riding with me now. Last week we were in our local woods and we swapped for a few laps....... scared me to death [:0]. Didnt realise how much more confident i was on my full suss till i went back. Never again

When do you find the Marin nervous?

I never had any real problems on mine yet. Although high speed cornering def improved when changed the tyres.

The bike and me coped with everything at Afan with the exception of the really step section on the black run part of Whites level, but that was more down to me bottling it.[:D]

Usually in quick singletrack, but I think it is a combination of tight head angle and tyres that just spin and spin in loose ground (as the one we have here). The front end just washed away from me when I was just in such terrain on tuesday's ride. Luckily I was quick to jump off, and only got some bruising and scratching. I did the same route with the GT two days earlier, and even though the terrain was wet (hence more stable) I felt more confident due to the slack angles and beefier tyres. Still, having done the exact same route with both bikes has helped me realize how much better the Marin climbs and accelerates!

Wolf, was that you I saw at St Martha's car park on sunday..?
You were arriving when I'd just finished my ride and my face, clothes and bike were pretty much covered in mud... I was wearing a red football shirt

My stars my chain and gear were making some nasty grinding from all that mud!

It could well have been! I was wearing a grey altura rain jacket and riding the GT. I probably had some mud over my persona too, but was only at the beginning of my ride, after half an hour of riding or so... You where not there on Tuesday too, where you? I saw two chaps on Rockriders, first at St. marthas and then at Newlands Corner. We keep on bumping on each other it seems [:D].

I am off for a ride tonight too, this time with the Marin 9and might lend the GT to a friend), if you are going to be around St. Marthas.

Yeah I think it was you - I was going quite fast and just remember a grey something - wasn't sure whether it was bike or jacket...
