New Shoes But What Pedal Do I Need?

Hello everyone

I have recently taken receipt of the following shoes:

My uncle managed to get his hands on them very cheaply, but I am unsure as to what type of pedals I need? I have a Trek 6000 and at present, they have just what I would consider flat pedals. The shoes have what can be described as two sort of tram lines, 3 cm long, at the front of the shoe and in each one is a plate that has two circles in them that can move back and forward. I am still relatively new to this and am just trying to work out what sort of new pedals I need to get for my bike. Any advice would be appreciated but if you need more info, please just ask.

Thanks for the reply Nick, so how do these pedals work? I have been having a look about and the pedals you mention dont look as if they would fit the shoes but then I read about cleats?!? Is this something in between the shoe and the pedal?

Can you tell I am new to this? [:D]

3 parts to the SPD(clipless) system the pedals, the shoes & the cleats, which you get with the pedals.

The cleats attach to the sole of the shoe with 2 bolts, the shoes then can clip into the pedals & hey presto!

I'd recommend Shimano pedals as they have adjustable release tension, M520/M540 are good, but M424's have a plastic cage around the mechanism, so you can still ride fairly well unclipped in techier sections.

Thanks Andy B! So how difficult is it to fit the SPD pedals and do they conform to some sort of universal fitting size or is there something I should watch out for?

Hi shimano pedals are a standard fit and i think that applies to all makes. You could try m520's to see how you get on with clipless. they are available for about œ25 maybe less if you shop around[:)]

Why not have a look at time pedals they never clog in the UK's horrid conditions are work really well for me [:D]

M520's are œ17.50 at Merlin (free P&P this week, too).

Thanks for all the replies. Going to get a pair of the 520's ordered up.

I take it riding with SPD's takes a bit of getting use to at first but like everything, perseverance is the key? I think I read you need to swivel your foot out to release them? Is engaging them in the first place easy enough?

Yes, you can adjust the tension on the pedal so that they clip and unclip easily and tighten them a bit as you get used to it.

Only been using them about 2 months but you do get used to them very quickly. Now I would hate to use flats again.

Yes swivel your ankle outwards to release. They are easy to clip in. There are tension screws on the pedals, loosen them at first as far as they will go, this will give you a good starting point and make life much easier when you want to unclip fast. There are decent instructions that come with the pedals explaining what you need to do. You will probably want to tighten them when you are more confident. Good luck [:)]

Hi everyone

Pedals have turned up and the cleats are fitted to my shoes. Just got to take the old pedals off and fit the new ones but this is where I am stuck! How do I get the old pedals off? It looks like I should just turn the sort of nut holding them on to the crank but it isnt budging!! Am I doing the right thing, and just persevere, or the completley wrong thing?

The bike is a Trek 6000 with Wellgo flat pedals.

With the spanner at the 12 o'clock position turn the spanner towards the back of the bike.
