new bike, how can I prevent it from getting stolen?
Had my previous bike stolen a month ago and finally got my new bike a couple of days ago, a Carrera Subway 1. And whilst it may not need be that expensive at œ200 compared to other bikes I really have become determined not to get this bike stolen. I have 2 decent locks, a solid D-lock with attachment cable and a Magnum cable lock.
A few times I have seen a few nice bikes with black tape around them, covering frame. So earlier today I used a silver metailic paint spray and sprayed over the brand names over the frame. I'm thinking a defaced bike might be less attractive to a thief as it might be harder to sell. What do you think? Well its too late now. I have the bike insured now also, does anyone now what to do to get it registered with the police is it a case of going with your bike to the police station or is taking the serial number enough?
Any advice would be great?
Thanks

Register your frame's serial at http://www.immobilise.com/
Been meaning to do this all week, since it was mentioned on the news - what with it being 'bike week' and all.

Stick a carrier bag over the saddle, that helps make it look crap & not worth nicking too.
Get it registered & always lock it securely with a 'Sold Secure' rated lock (yours could well be).

Usually having Carrera on the frame actually deters thieves... ;-)
Print your house number and postcode in small letters on laminated paper, cut up, and put in places like the seatpost, forks, stem, bottom bracketshell etc. 2 locks a very good idea. Lock in a busy place, and make sure both wheels are secure.

Like sonic said, make sure every QR is locked up, maybe buy some QR locks? But I have heard they are not very good.

A friend has some of the locking QR skewers, they have a 5 sided key to unlock them, so an Allen key won't unlock them.
They have been very secure, no probs with them, shame I can't remember which ones she has!

Cheers guys, registration with immobilise.com took 1 minute. Yes my locks are sold secure and the frame, both wheels and saddle all locked. I just hope it doesnt get nicked. Its so unfair that there are so many thieves are out there.

Keep your bike inside your home. Also keep it inside the place you work in. Buy an old crappy bike to ride around town so you can leave it outside without worrying. I never leave my eye off mine for more than one minute... I rather don't go to places where I'd have to leave it locked outside. Wanted to buy something in a mall, saw I'd have to leave the bike outside for some 10 minutes so I didn't go in at all.
To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

Retaining your QR seatpost, can you take the post and saddle with you when you lock the bike up? Eg if you are just popping into a shop or leaving it outside work. Maybe a bike that an opportunist thief couldn't ride away without impaling his bum is less appealing. To deter a determined and well-equipped thief, you want to lock your bike up next a more appealing bike to steal - not being bad but I imagine the hybridy Subway isn't the easiest bike to sell on. Looks nice stealth-sprayed, BTW - I'd do that to my bike for purely cosmetic reasons if I didn't think I't mess it up.
Good that you have a cable lock as well as a D-lock, because I guess a thief would need both bolt-cutters and a car-jack to get through both locks.

Lock both wheels, put it in a place with CCTV, register your serial number... and if your not in a 'safe' area buy an uber crap bike to use.
You could try and put some details hidden in the seat, which may aid people who try and recover it if its stolen.

Subtle placing of decals, that make it stand out from other similar bikes?
