What Helmet?

Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a helmet, in the years that I've been riding I've never worn one, they felt uncomfortable and I never really did any riding which I felt required one. But these days I'm starting to ride what I consider more dangerous routes, and if I were to come off I'd be in big trouble without a helmet.

My issue is that I have a big head, and I mean physically! I think I'm about 58cm, and most helmets I try look ridiculous or just perch on the top of my head.

So I thought about getting one of what I can only decribe as these "skater" skyle helmets, like the PRO-TEC Ace: http://www.wiggle.co.uk/ProductDetail.a ... 5360028966

But I'm open to opinions, am I missing anything by getting this kind of thing? Any big heads out there had the same issue?

I have also got a 58cm melon, and also have not bought a helmet because of how they look, but did consider one of the TSG skate helmets....but have been put off them as apparently you get too hot in them as they are not vented as much as proper mtb ones.

I would also like to hear recommendations from people on low profile helmets, im going to try on a Giro Hex during the week tho and hoping it doesnt look like i am balancing something on my head[:D]

My brother has a larger than average nut and found that the MET Testagrossa was perfect for him.

The Fox flux has quite a deep bowl shape, I only need a small so the large one must be huge.

I would really recommend a helmet though. I had a nasty crash two weeks backs when I went over the bars into a tree trunk. It ripped the cage mountings out and the top is loose under the coating were it has obviously deformed. My head however was fine and I believe that without my helmet I would have at least had concussion and potentially worse head injuries.

The Giro medium size helmets go up to a 59cm head so you ain't that big. Havoc, Animas, E2 and Zen all worth trying for comfort

I have a 58cm and use the Giro Animas which feels pretty good

To be honest everyones head is a bit different it makes the most sence to get down to lbs and try on a few lids see what fits bite the bullet and pay the premium lbs charge for superior service.

Apparently your head swells up when you exert yourself in the summer, so you may need a large one after all. I have an old 54-59cm Giro something or other which fit fine in the shop and when I set off but within a few minutes starts caning!

I wear a large Hex now, which is plenty big. I tried the Fox Flux though, only comes in two sizes and the M/L might be just right for you - it's smaller than the L Hex, but not too small.

I have a 59cm head and a large hex and it feels good and looks ok. I definately look better in it than i would if i was dribbling down my chin having not worn one.

I use a giro hex and they are a great helmet really comfy adn give great protection [:D]

I wear a large Zen on my 59 1/2cm noggin. Don't care how it looks really as it's gonna stop me caving my skull in as easily as not wearing it. Very comfy, loads of venting and in matt black it goes with anything I wear on the bike

Am i right in thinking one of the only things the xen has over the hex is being about œ40 more?

Better venting and no visible fixings so nylon straps won't get worn/torn as you headbutt your way through the woods
