Removing the middle chain ring.

How the hell do you remove the middle chainring? I needed to replace mine after snapping a couple more teeth. Unbolted and removed the outer ring, but the middle one is smaller than the bracket that the bolts go through.

Zinn says they are easy to remove - just unbolt and remove. Park Tools don't appear to say anything and I'm confused.

Anyone help?

you need one of these and an allen key that fits the hole.

you need to give a little bit of rotation and then it comes off easy.

Cant you just take the cranks off the bike and remove the inner chainring too? Or have i missed something.

yes to remove the granny ring you need to remove the cranks but for the middle ring it should just come off easy with a little wiggle.

LX Hollowtech2.

I've tried rotation and everything, but it definitely is too small to come off easily..

Do I need to remove the cranks?

Yeh that would make it easier. Are you wanting to take teh bolts out and remove the chain ring?

Scott, you need to get the crank off I have just been trying to do a similar thing with mine. It makes it easier if its off - is it ISIS or Square Taper?

Dunk - yeah.

Bloodlock - haven't got a scooby mate. I'll have to have a read up on Park Tools to see how to get the cranks off. Pain in the neck!

You may have self extracting bolts which means its a doddle

Cheers. Mine looks slightly different to the XTR one in the picture. I think its just a case of undoing the pinch bolts and then tapping the crank off.

Mine are hollow right the way through.

you'll need one of these

to undo the crank bolt on the l/h side then if you undo the pinch bolts on the crank arm it should just slide off. This allows the R/h arm axle assembly to slide out. I strongly recomend not taping anything with a hammer you shouldn't need to.

Hollowtech 2 middle rings are a crank out job, they wont come over the spider. But its literally a 2 min job to remove HT2 cranks and just as easy to replace them provided you have the Park tool

Certainly the Shimano/RaceFace/Middleburm middles I've used wont pop over the spider

i am going to hide in the corner and suck my thumb. even with the inner part of the bash ring mounted on the frame there was no way it was going to come off.

any ways forget the tool. slacken of the two pinch bolts (a bit by a bit) then jam something into the preload screw and undo. then just pull the crank arm off and then pull the drive side out.

Is the preload screw the black plastic thing that's round the edge of the hollow tube on the left side?

Does it unscrew? Its difficult to see once its on and there's no mention in the instructions.

I've never known such a headache over changing a chain ring.
