Almost broke my shoulder...

I climbed my hill today, enjoyed food, drink and sun at the top, met some German dude on an enduro/freeride bike and we agreed to go downhill together. It was a well known track, I was on a non-difficult segment, and it just happened. Wham. Don't even know what hit me, fell down and had my elbow and shoulder buried in the ground... My guess is that I was a bit distracted. I had a guy on a bike with 180 mm suspension and full face armor behind me, he followed me as I knew the track. But it must be that I thought he doesn't like it because he can't go fast with me blocking the way or something. Although he said I should go first. So maybe it got me distracted from the ride itself, I was probably a bit nerovus being "pursued" like that.

Btw. I'm sooooo glad I had my 661 elbow pads! They saved my elbow, just got some scratches on the part where there's the elbow sock, to the side of the pad, it got torn a little. But my shoulder got whacked, you have a picture here. My rear tyre also got flat. Maybe the pic doesn't look all that bad, but I was in pain, had trouble moving the arm, and a bit dazed for some 15 minutes, seeing stars and stuff, almost in a little shock, must be the stress and adrenaline, but my head cleared later. And I'm so glad that guy was with me. He took care of me, fixed my puncture and pushed my bike a bit up to the road as my arm was hurting and I was still a bit shaken, and we went down the road together. We saw it wasn't all that bad, I could ride on a flat road, so we parted ways, and I went to the ER to get checked, X-ray showed no fractures and the doctor said I'll be fine in a few days. Thank God...

I'm okay now, I can ride the bike on the road with no bumps, I can use the arm to grab stuff and move it quite a lot and the pain has lessened. But it still hurts at some specific moves.

Some may say you don't need a body armor for cross country, but I'm a living example that you do [:D]. Or is it that I ride too fast descents? [:I]

And, one more thing. I seem to have detected a VERY small wobble in the left pedal, as if the crank arm is a little bent. But it seems barely detectable, I'm not even too sure! Nothing seems loose and it all rotates fine. Should I ignore it, or is time for a hollowtech crankset upgrade? [:p]

P.s. It was still a good day! [:D]

To clip or not to clip, that is the question. Whether tis nobler in the mind of men to suffer the dings and contusions of unclipp'd riding, or to bind thy feet against a sea of gnarly singletrack and by these contraptions, ride o'er them with ease. To clip... to slip no more, and by clipping to end the buttache and the thousand natural shocks that ryders are heir to; tis a consummation devoutly to be honed. No clip - to slip perchance to be thrashed most heinously...

    Oh, definitely upgrade!

How do you mean wobble? Could it be the pedal bearings, or do you mean the crank arm on the spindle (or the BB bearings?)

Hmm, I can't feel like the bearings are busted, it rotates normally, but as if the pedal surface isn't always parallel to the ground, it's tilted inwards on the top of the stroke and outwards on the bottom. But it's soooo slight... barely noticeable.

nice injuries buddy! similar to my off the other day, cept i havnt got the elbow pads yet lol, the specific movement im taking it to be when u raise your arm to shoulder level when your arm straight? maybe when you try to lift weight away from your body straight armed? and maybe on full twist when u rotate your arm when by your side?

  • sounds like you have slightly bent the cranks arm, but it nothing to worry about till it falls of, snaps or starts making noices, yet you still have and excuse to start upgrading,[:D][^]

Heh... I don't have the chest armor with shoulder pads yet lol... If I could find a front-side only model, I could carry it just attached out on the rear side of my backpack, and put it on at the top of the hill. Lol... kinda weird to see someone armored like a knight on an xc bike, but still [:D]

It starts to hurt more when raised to shoulder level, and when I twist the arm inward. But imagine you were painting a canvas in front of you, I can do such range of movement without extra pain. I can hold a bottle with it and pour into a glass too (I'm drinking wine now to numb the pain [:D]).

And I remember the pics of your injuries. Couldn't find them though, can you post a link of the topic? How long did it take 'til you could ride properly again? Damn, I want to ride! Stuck to roads for a week at least though... [:I] But maybe I can still climb, get to the top of the mountain, and take the road back down...

So you think it's the crank arm bent? Not perhaps the BB axle?

They don't sell separate left crank arms don't they?

I can get a Deore hollowtech crankset for 37 GBP, or an LX hollowtech II + BB for 70 GBP. Might go for the regular Deore, much cheaper...

But if this one continues to work and it's still safe to ride on, it's not urgent.

I hit the deck when playing football once with my shoulder leading into terra firma. It was 5 weeks before it was right as the jarring impact wrecked the sockets ligaments. All across my neck and upper back was in agony. You often find the real pain comes 3-4 days after the injury.I hope this isn't the case with you and it's just superficial...Best of luck

Amazing how a good stack causes a talking point amongst people just as much as a good ride. The 2 go hand in hand [8D]

Looks like I'm a bit better off than you then... I did some 25km today, went to a forest where my m8s practiced jumps, gonna post some links to pictures when the other guy uploads them, they're funny! [:D]

I can ride both road and off road with small bumps without too much pain, can't climb well when you need arms to counteract the leg strokes though. It hurts at some specific moves.

Also, something interesting: I let my friend try out my bike, he had no SPDs but said he can't feel the pedal being uneven, and I tried his Cannondale Jekyll and felt his pedal was bent too! And he assures me it isn't. I'm baffled now... [8)]

Gonna put on my normal pedals later to see how they feel like, if I'll be able to unscrew them with this shoulder that is... Haha maybe I bent my leg, or the SPD cleat is a bit funny? Will keep you posted, and I appreciate your advice here, so we can get to the bottom of it! [;)]

Ok here is some media of today's adventures! [:)] I proved to be in good enough shape to deliver beers, and to be used as an object to jump over lol (at the end of the video) [:D]

I rode a few miles to the 24-7 drugstore tonight to get some bandages and an antibiotic cream, rode on the asphalt like a maniac... I think my shoulder is better now than in the morning... Incredible... Will see about tomorrow, but this was an ok day! [:)]

Yo... it's incredible, I went to the mountain again today, thought at least to ride an uphill instead of being at home all day, but the arm is much better, I was able to ride a descent over some easier trails, no pain even over some bumps. Guess I was really, really lucky. Couldn't dream I'd be ok so soon! Gotta be careful now, not waste that second chance I've been given! [:I]

P.s. regarding the crank arm, I asked some guy with SPDs to try my bike, and he couldn't feel the pedal being uneven. I also stopped paying attention to it already, maybe it was all in my head, because my right arm is more stiff so maybe the rest of my body moves differently to keep balance and mr. brain gets confused lol [:D]
