XT M765 bite adjust
Bought a set of these, and just wondered how i adjust the bite of the brake. it seems a little low. Is there not something i can do to change this.
I read the install instructions, but there not much use.
Is it a matter of bleeding the brakes?
Thanks all.

The only adjustments I know of are for 'lever reach', no 'bite' adjusters (I guess you mean like Avid Juicy 7's)
Bleeding won't help either, they are as they are (if you know what I mean!)

Ah right, so I can't adjust how far I have to pull the lever in until the pads make contact then?
It just seems a little close to the bars...

you can move the levers away.
a tip. just get out there and use them. if the calipers are adjusted correctly the pads will settle and the lever movement will reduce. take suitable allen keys on rides with you untill this happens.
basically the pads need to find their Home position. this can be forced by removing the wheel pushing the pads together and then opening them so that the rotor will fit. then readjust the caliper etc. but doing this can cause other problems if you are not sure with discs.
so just use them.

you want a tip ???
ad some more fluid (mineral oil or citreon suspension fluid [;)] no joke.. same stuff)
99% of the time they are low on oil so pull to much to the bars.

What Fozzy said. I've used XT's for a while and find that if you top up the mineral oil it moves the bite point further away from the handlebars, if you get my meaning.

Hmmm, I am not sure why physically with an open system that would work, as I was under the impression a fixed amount of oil was pumped, and the pads retract due to the seals. Could be wrong.

it's just the way having owned 525 and 535 shimano brakes when they pull to the bars the oil level it to low.

No idea how, or why, it works but I've got XT's on my hardtail and my full sus and it does work.

the only posible problem with adding more oil is when you come to replace the pads. but yes that is another way to get the brakes to feel better. But i would always just use them. even just pulling and holding the levers can help settle the pads, as can leaving the levers Zip tied back over night.

Wouldn't more oil cause them to pump up quicker over long hard breaking?

well more oil will mean that there is no where for the hot oil to expand to. leading to lots of problems. draging pads, fade, boiled fluid.

for grizedale adjust the levers forward so that they dont touch the bars when pulled. you may need to adjust as you ride.

How do you adjust them like that Nick?

look for a allen key on the inside of the lever kind of inline with the body. it should be in the end of a threaded rod that goes to the piston so you can adjust where the lever is. just about every hydro has one.

happy to help,
as i always say a bleed or adding/removing fluid is one of the last things that should be done with prebled systems. normally it just come down to set up.
