Hubs

Had this problem a couple of months ago. I had my bike on my shoulder, fiddling with the gears, and as I turned the pedals I noticed the rear wheel seemed loose. Checked the bolts and realised that the hub and cassette seemed loose, rather than the wheel.
I stripped the cassette off, and took apart the freewheel. Cleaned the ball bearings and coated everything in lube. Put it all back together and it seemed ok.
Went for a ride last night and have noticed the same problem. Kept on thinking I had a flat, but when you take hold of the wheel by the tyre, you can actually feel it wobbling from side to side.
It occurred to me that I probably should have greased the bearings last time, which I intend to do tonight, but is there anything else I should do? I don't know why this is happening - is my hub faulty?
My bike's only 4 months old - should this be happening? Or is it just dirt getting in there?
EDIT: Park Tools site suggests cleaning everything with a solvent. I used a citrus degreaser last time. Should I use alcohol instead?

What hub is it? You will need to insepct the bearings and races. If pitted, then its new hub time (though bearings can be replaced). Did you adjust correctly using cone spanners and a 17mm for the locknut? There is a knack to it.

Its an LX hub.
The bearings looked ok last time. I used the tools from my Lidl toolset, and am pretty sure that I did it all correctly.

Spin the axle by hand, can you feel any notchiness? The axle is def loose yeah? Not loose spokes or QR?

Definitely not loose spokes or QR. When the wheel is off, there is play between the cassette and wheel (although the cassette seems secure, the play seems to be from within - hence why I stripped the freewheel down).

Cassette play and axle play are somewhat different. When you say freehub, do you just mean the axle and the 9 bearings at each side? Freehubs enclose the ratchet mechanism, and are unbolted from the hub (with axle removed) with a 10mm allen key. The cassette and freehub can wobble, but the axle remain perfect.

I'm confusing myself now!
Brilliant article though. I'll do all that tonight and see how I get on.
Thanks.
