Attention PIKE owners

I am thinking of changing my Fox float 130s to some PIKE air u-turns in the not-too-distant future. (Bike is Trek EX8)
Would there be a noticeable improvement in performance over the floats? (which I find a tad flexy)
Also, would there be much of a weight increase, bearing in mind I would also have to invest in a new front wheel with 20mm hub?
Are there any cheap sources for the Pikes?
Cheers......

Talking a pound more in weight (ish) but massive increase in stiffness from the 20mm thru axle. Motion Control damper adds more fine tuning (standard floats prone to diving)

Can't comment on the reletive stifness or perfomance between the Pikes and the Fox, as I've never had Fox but I've been using the Pike Air U-turns for a few months now and I've been amazed by them. They are stupidly plush and certainly seem pretty stiff. I can't honestly think of a bad thing to say about them. They have to be the best value for money fork available, expecially at œ260!

Also, there are two 454 models, what is the difference between them? (I'm not bothered about poploc but want the u-turn)

Had pike 454 dual airs on me chameleon for 12 months now, the best single crown forks i've ever owned. not the lightest, granted but they are so plush and stiff that you dont mind the extra weight. and as an added bonus, apart from the odd wipe down after a grubby ride, they take next to no looking after. as for comparisons over fox forks, not ridden any in anger myself i dont know how stiff they are, but the fact that the pikes are 20mm bolt through says it all[:D] (oh, and the maxle front wheel release is brilliant, as quick as quick release no probs!)0
-
Pikes are great forks, the extra stiffness is very noticeable compared to fox 32 with a qr. I have 454 air uturns, but i always wish i had gone for coils for a wee bit more plushness.
The only reason to swap fox 32s for revelations would be to get rid of them before the stanchions wear out.
Marzocchi All mountain SL are worth a look now they have a maxle type thing.
I've had Lyriks for a few weeks now and they are amazing, if complete overkill. The damping is much better than pikes.0 -
Fox have to go to Mojo for repair and service for warranty as i believe it.
Rockshox can be repaired or serviced by any dealer. This can add some extra costs to maintenance for a fox fork.
Also US dealers will export Rockshox forks to UK, saving some cash, whereas part of the dealer agreement with fox means no export to UK. Most of the Fox forks from Hong Kong ,Taiwan on fleabay etc means you get an end of line surplus production run fork thats been left over from a bike build so not sure that warranty is the same. Best to check up.

Nick, I'm thinking of doing the same as you. I'm half thinking of the Revelations to save a 1lb in weight, but am probably leaning towards the Pikes. Not sure whether to go for air or coil u-turns though...

The air pikes offer a small weight saving over the coil. They are so smooth from the box.Just set up the sag but don't go on the stanchion pressures for your weight i found. Too harsh.I have about 90psi in the + chamber and 60psi in the - chamber.
They do take some getting used to if you have never ridden with them but they aren't as noodly and flexy as QR forks. Point and shoot sums the experience up. They do encourage you to hit stuff harder and be a hooligan but they can cause the front end dive if you don't
have the bars held up properly when going off jumps and drops.

I have the revelations and don't find them flexy, but I have never used Pikes to compare against so I can't give a direct comparison. I would probably get pikes if i needed new forks but I am happy with my revelations so will stick there for a while.

Streako - I take it you're not in any hurry? If you want a wee shot of some Revs then feel free to have a shot on my bike, although it'll obviously be a little big for you. You could also try giving Stu555 a shout as he's got Pikes for comparison (as well as SLW), even if they are (both) on a larger bike(s) too.
In fact, If you could just sprout to about 6'2" then you'd be fine!

You could get them "Pushed" which apparently gets rid of the brake dive and spiking issue, I think it costs about œ80 inc a service.
I think it is TF Tuned that offer this service, I am thinking of getting it done in a couple of months.

I dont think Revelations would be any better or worse than my current Foxes. One of my main complaints is the vague steering which can sometimes be felt on technical or fast stuff. The Foxes certainly arent bad, but it is a case of changing them when they wear out.
I have had a word with StuM who is quite taken with his Pikes, and if they're good enough for him, they're good enough for me.
Hamish - have you got the new bike up and running yet? You'll be wanting a mental fork for that beast!
