I'm considering getting the above bike, but don't know if there are better options from Trek, Giant, GT or Genesis. It'll be through the cycle to work scheme through my new employer so has to be one of these makes and similar price range to allow for other bits and pieces within the œ1000 limit. Can anyone help?

Looks good. I'd have a look round planet-x as well, they do the bike to work scheme, and have some cracking bikes.
Considering a Kaffenback myself.

Have to stay loyal to Buckingham bikes as they are organising the scheme specifically for me, so the brands above are what I'm limited to

It looks rather poor to me. I've just brought a full carbon bike with a dura-ace groupset for just over the œ1000 mark. (Although this was an 06 model that was heavily reduced so you wouldn't get it through the ride to work scheme.)
Sora gears should be avoided, they're horrible. Tiagra is heavy but it works well. 105 is fantastic and it's compatible with both Ultegra and D-A (unlike the last two).
The Shimano 2200 hubs always used to be very cheap and nasty and i'm afraid Alex rims are not known for being the best quality.
For your œ1000 budget the best bikes I know of are Planet-x pro cabon and wiggles Cayo. Ok, they're more expensive but believe me they're soooo much better.
Let us know what you ideally want the bike for and how much you want to spend. I'm sure we can recommend something.0 -
The bike will be used for commuting and fitness basically, no racing or road club meets. I'll be looking at œ650 max price as I want to use the rest of the budget for a small hydropack, shoes, pedals for the road bike and a seatpost and saddle for the MTB

Commuting and fitness; you'll be better off with a frame that has a slightly more relaxed geometry and room for mud-guards.

I was considering the SCR Ltd as well, esp as my shop specialises in Giant bikes. Just liked the look of the Scott. Will see if I can try the SCR before I make up my mind. Just haven't got the large in stock and the medium is too compact

Road bikes IMHO are easier to buy than MTBs, that one looks pretty good.

Personally i'd recomend a trek they have a really good geometry and are very comfy to ride if you just want it for fitness rather than racing. You'll get a tiagra equipped one with carbon forks for œ650 with the option of a tripple chainset which may well be worth considering. I've ridden a lot of different road bikes and the trek 100 series has impressed me more than the entry level offerings from giant and scott.

If you want a Trek to commute on, but not race, I would recommend the Pilot 1.2. More comfortable and bang on œ650 http://www.trekbike.co.uk/2007/bikes.ph ... =0&ID=177#

Yeah thats a good option and you can always change the stem to get a racier position.0

I tried the SCR Ltd today and it was soooooo nice! Decided I am going to get that, but need to omit a couple of items from the list of extras now so I can afford it
