Ebay Sour Grapes

I've just lost on an item I really wanted. Which is quite normal I know. But I really wanted this item!!
I've just checked the profile of the guy who won, and he's basically an item "churner". Gets them, then puts them straight back on hoping for a profit. Doesn't love the items!!
I have to admire the guy, but not when he steals my item!!

piece of pie...
you set the "snipe bid time" in the configuration (i use 4-5 seconds) and put in a snipe amount (œ50 say) and 4 seconds before the end it bid's œ50 no one will have time to submit a higher bid if they are doing it manually so you will ONLY be beaten by a higher sniped bid or a higher initial bid..

But the surely if a couple of nutters bid something up and you whack another œ50 on your paying way over the odds?0
-
nooo doesn't work by that.. it bid's like normal ebay but all it does it put you bid in at the end, so someone that isn't sniping or someone that tries to bid over the top of you won't be able to do so..

OR
You can stop being so tight in the first place and just bid what you are prepared to pay for it. If someone outbids you then it goes for more than you were prepared to pay for it anyway, and if nobody beats your bid you get it for a fraction above the previous highest bid. Sniper? LMAO

oh sorry i forgot the idea of a auction is to buy (as a buyer) the item as cheap as possible.
please show a little more respect to the forum members.

To be fair to davepiggott13, his point is valid.
I do use a sniper, purely because i was p*ssed of getting outbid, but they aren't exactly in the "spirit" of how it should be done. It's not exactly a level playing field if you are bidding against folk who use snipers.
Hence, if you can't beat em, join em.
FWIW, i don't think his post was particularly offensive either.Roadie

My response to that is that I agree Sniping is indeed not in the spirit of Ebay. However, it also appears as though Sniping is now pretty common-place so there's little point trying to be sporting about bidding for items now - especially against "professional" snipers who use it to win items and put them straight back on for profit. I was genuinely going to love and treasure the work-stand, and that's why I had sour-grapes (although that sounds like a Haemorrhoid condition).
I'm sure there's some clever-d1ck out there right now who's inventing something even less-sporting for Ebay bidding than Sniping software.

how short can you set a sniper bid? you know, many seconds before auction end?

Aside from the rather obviously jokey comment of 'being tight' davepiggott13's making a very fair point I'd say. Set your bid for what you are happy paying as a maximum and if the item comes your way for less, then all well and good.
If there's an item I really want I usually bid at the last opportunity (manually). Putting my eBay usename and password into a third party piece of sw doesn't really appeal to me from a security perspective.

[:)] Some of my Snaps [:)]
0 -
But the point is, it is no longer a level playing field, so the fluffy-lovely approach to Ebaying just means you're onto a loser in a lot of cases. This is especially the case if the item is particularly desireable where several people are watching and bidding. With Sniping, there's only "one" of you putting a figure in that you're happy with, because the Sniper is one step ahead.
GT Avalanche Expert 20060 -
My tactics on eBay changed radically after I was gazumped with "4 seconds" to go on an item I SO wanted and on which I'd been the highest bidder for four days. I guess my "fluffy-lovely approach" lasted for that long.
Mind you, the world's a dog eat dog environment isn't it, hence me now sniping with amounts I'm happy to pay.

Some Snaps
0 -
I mainly started using it when an item either ended when I was out or in bed.
I tend to bid manually if Im at home, unless its something I really want...

It stops me getting into silly bidding wars & paying more than I'm comfortable with.
Most of the time I've lost its been from a bidding war happeniing between 2 others before my snipes gone in & the items been availible elsewher for less.0 -
Spirit of ebay - what a load of tosh!
The idea is to buy as cheaply as you can- if you can use technology (like a sniper) to help then all well and good.
You're not cheating the seller - you still need to be the highest bidder to win.
I've never used a sniper myself (I normally just try to time my bids for the last few seconds) but don't have a problem with them. Would be really useful for auctions that finish when I'm at work/asleep/busy

What happens if several people using snipers bid on the same item for the same amount? Who wins then?
