WTB Speed Disc - Replacements

All,
I've been reading the reviews of this rim on MTBR, and it has been slated pretty unanimously. I recently went through a wheel-truing exercise on my rear as I discovered it was well out of shape. I do not do drop-offs or very tough terrain, so was surprised that the wheel was so out.
Is this experience mirrored by other owners? Is it more to do with who built the wheel rather than a poor component?
What would be a good replacement for this rim? I don't think I'll be buying top-end stuff either, as I intend upgrading and replacing a fair bit over the coming months.

Build is very very important with wheels, and this rim is usually found on factory built wheels, so the reviews will be somewhat biased when compared to 717 etc, which are almost always handbuilt. If the rim is not twisted, worn, or cracked, it sounds like it just needs a good rebuild.

As a start, I'm going to try and rebuild them myself using a guide Fozzy recommended to me. I figure I have nothing to lose if I already intend replacing them or giving to LBS to sort if I fluff it. I did a pretty good job at truing them when using my LBS workshop recently, but even so, they're still out. I know it's probably marginal, but now I know they're out - it's bugging me!! The spokes also squeal a lot when adjusted, so I have to loosen them off an lube anyway.
So Mavic 717 the way forward if replacing?

WTB Speed Disc's are a decent rim. I have a spare set of wheels built around them and Hope XC hubs. In use, you can't feel the difference between them and my 717's.
They were built by a very good wheel builder though.Roadie
