Removing Hope Head Dr
Gabber
Posts: 54
Many moons ago I stupidly over torqued the bolt on my Hope Head Dr, resulting in the bolt shearing. I've lived with it for ages, but now the headset has developed some (read - a lot!) of play and I need to remove the head doctor and replace it and sort my headset out.
Any ideas on how to remove/loosen the head dr? The bolt has sheared flush with the top of the expanding wedgey thing so there is absolutely nothing to grip onto.
Is it possible to do anything from the bottom (i.e. up the fork steerer?

well as it is just alloy drill the center out and then undo it as there should be no tension on it. then just undo the locking part as normal.

Yep, drill it out. And sort your BB out whilst at it. [;)]

alternatively just ride on it for 10m without clamping the stem.. they normally drop out then! [;)]

the problem with drilling is this, you WILL be turning the mech in the same direction as you tighten it and you "could" end up misshaping the steerer tube and putting a bulge in it..

? what mech? on mine there was a gert big allen key hole for tigtening it in the steerer and that had a smaller hole through it for the bearing preload bolt.
if you sheraed the fitting "bolt" the whole thing would have fallen out.

I would imagine you'd have to put an enormous torque on it to bulge a steerer!

but again the only bolt is the "top cap" bolt and just touching it with a drill should rally cause it to screw itself out the other side?

sorry nick i think it's my poor description.
the end the bolt screws into is an expanding plug, if he is drilling out the is the chance he may catch the expanding mechanism and bulge the steerer.

No need to piddle around with girly drills like this lot suggest [:D][:p]
You will need:
1) long, large screwdriver
2) big hammer
Proceed as follows:
1) Insert screwdriver up steerer tube from beneath
2) Smack seven bells out of screwdriver with hammer
3) Repeat step 2) until something breaks.
You won't find that on the Park Tools website. Bunch of amateurs.
The above procedure also works well for truing wheels, removing stubborn bottom brackets, fixing kitchen cupboards etc... etc...

I have dabbled. Works for that too, but better with a slightly smaller hammer.

Get yourself a stud extractor set. I'll happily lend you mine if you drop me your address but their so cheap on the bay, you might want to get your own for not too much more than the cost of return postage. Or you could always coax the bolt out with a hammer & punch.0

Cheers Mr Clunk - one extractor set bid and on it's way - hopefully I'll have a sorted headset again!
