Hi
Just bought first bike and am now looking for rear and maybe front mud guards - are they worth it and which one(s) would be best?
To fit to Mongoose Tyax Elite.
Seen Crud Catcher race pack (both front and rear) and also Dirt Monkeys set too (reduced in Halfords at the moment).
No idea which to go for - or is there a better make out there?
Thanks

use a crud catcher 4 on the front only because of my exposed cable routing..don't bother with a rear one.

You may find with some of the moulded ones that they are hit by the fork when turning, thats why i like the mk4 as its not rigid.

I got the crud front and rear (check my sig) and they are great. Never had any splashes wahtsoever since having them. I started with the dirtmonkey from Halfords and I wasn't a fan hence swapping it for a Crud. Bit too flimsy and nowhere near as wide as the Cruds so you still get some spray! Crud all the way [;)]

  • the crud catcher in the race pack doesnt have the rubbery front to it so that it doesnt move when your forks hit it

    buy them seperately

Also, the rear guard in the race pack is slimmer than one bought separately. I'm with Brun; buy separates.

Thanks guys, now I have a dilemma - go with the majority and get crud, or go with Omegas who swears by Topeak defender!
I had noticed that the separates were different to individual in the crud, so glad someone's told me which is better.
    Thanks again!

Can't help you with that dilemma, I'm afraid, Ruth.

I'd definitely go for a front guard, though; the rear is good for keeping your bum dry, but the front is invaluable for keeping errant dog turds out of your mouth. All or nothing, I say. Either cycle without guards at all or stick them on both ends.
