Thinking of taking a spin round Cannock Chase (follow the dog?) on Friday afternoon. Anyone know how the recent weather has effected it? I'm driving from about 35 miles away so dont really want to waste my diesel if it's waterlogged.

Ps any recommedations if I get there re trails etc? Cheers Jon

  • Rode there on Saturday, although not FTG, other trails with a local guide. It hissed it down during the ride, but TBH everything was still rideable. I used Panracer XC Fire Pro tyres without too much trouble - it was my lack of skill that left me in the brambles! [:D]

i was over there a few weeks ago after a similar amount of rain and it wasn't fun.

other side of the chase shoukld be fine though, if you head over sherbrook valley way instead.

there is a concert on there this weekend, open air thing, and at least a few sections of the dog are closed sat, so i;d guess they will be closed fri too.

    from chase trails website.............

We have now had confirmation of the closure dates for the concert, they are as follows. Sections 1,2,3and4 will be closed from Monday 18th June, to Tuesday 26th June inclusive. This is due to Health and Safety considerations. A diversion will be posted. Please obey all signage. Thanks

Thanks for the info chaps. I think I'll give it a miss this friday as it'll be my first spin round there so I was hoping to stick to one of the easier to follow trails (FTD).

Are there any guides online for Cannocks trails??

  • also this weekend the concerts are on, so ftd will be cut to a shorter lap, plus loads of drunken idiots about

Just for yor info did a lap of FTD on Monday night and it was water, water everywhere. 13 was a waterfall and 4 was its usual.. Did part of it last night and it was almost dry everywhere. But must say we only use the dog as a means to get from the pub to better trails....

Fair enough, I've never riden there before. Do any of you guys have advice for better trails round there?

I live in Rugby near Coventry and to be honest there's not a lot round here at all other than a couple of old railway lines.

If you can find Sherbrook Valley, Brocton Coppice and Abrahams Valley then you are in the right place for a lot of the cheeky bits. The West Mids forum lot know it like the back of their hands, so i would try and tag along with them if you can.

  • The Chase is like any other area, it rains it gets muddy, but aint that whole point of mtbing, different conditions bring different challenges. For a man made track ftd is sound, those who build and maintain it do so voluntarily, if you don't like it don't ride it, or stick to fair weather riding.

Next time your up at Chase Beacon John on a weekend day give us a shout, I'll show you some decent singletrack you can tag on to FTD.

How's Sailsbury Fully? Wedding go ok? Hope to see you back up here soon :)

It all went well cheers Mark. My best man destroyed me in his speech, he seems to have forgotten that i'll be returning the favour in September though [}:)].
Salisbury is ok (I think it's monsoon season down here at the moment). I've not been riding for a good few weeks, as i've been so busy wrecking the house with my poor attempts at DIY [:(]. I don't think i'll be up Cannock until August either (It may have dried out by then i guess [;)])
