Rear mech adjustment / resetting.

Hi all,
I would like to reset my rear mech and set up the hi / lo and indexing again.
What I would like to clarify is how do I reset the adjusting barrel on the mech itself. When looking directly at the mech from the rear, if I was to remove the cable and turn the barrel adjuster fully clockwise into the mech, would this then allow me max adjustment (counter clockwise) when indexing etc..?
Then is it just a matter of setting the limit screws, attaching the cable, making sure the shifter is on the smallest cog and lightly taking up the slack and tightening the clamp. The indexing should work then and any fine tuning would be to increase cable tension..?
Hope you understand what I am trying to ask and would appreciate your help.

Ok,
I have read the link you gave me Nick and I sort of understand it. The thing is I look at things in more detail than is required sometimes and I can worry to much when it's quite simple and straight forward.
What I wanted to confirm was how do you reset the barrel adjuster to allow max adjustment. Am I right in saying wherever the barel adjuster is, loosening the cable and then tightening the clanp again would reset it anyway..?
Sorry for coming across as a little dumb but you guy's have some good experience to share..!
Cheers

when adjusting the barrel adjuster you sould not ne touching any clamps.
the barrel adjuster adds or removes tension in the cable as needed. touch the clap and any tension has gone.
the barrel is used as not many people can get the tension correct. and the barrel adjusters are used to get this.

A quarter of a turn can make a difference of the adjuster. You can unscrew it all the way out if not careful!

I wrote a large post about this not long ago.
Rear mechs are quite easy to setup.
I put the barrel adjuster in the middle (allows for error in both directions)
1. Disconnect chain and cable at mech, mech should move freely.
2. Set high and low trim screws for 1st and top gear. Push the mech to 1st and ensure it is inline. Release and check top gear is inline, adjust trim screw if needed.
3. Reconnect cable and tension.
4. Connect chain
5 Try running up and down gears, use barrel adjusters if tension is wrong.
Ride bike,
Dax

Perhaps the mech hanger, but the mech it self, unlikely.

OK,
removed the front and rear mech today because I thought 'why not' time to understand whats going on etc.
Gave both a good clean and lube.
Refitted everything and reset the adjusters etc as detailed in park.
Fitted the XTR cables at the same time taking care on the length of the cable outers (ref Sheldon).
Did everything as described on Sheldon and Park Tools and all I can say is spot on..! [:D]
Just like to say thanks to all for the advice etc [^]
Cheers
