Starter racing

Hi everyone,

After years of enjoying social / enjoyment riding I've decided I'd like to have a crack at racing. I'm undecided as to which type of racing to go for, as I prefer going downhills, and I think I'm reasonably competent, but I don't know whether I'd be out of my depth DH racing.

Does anyone know of any racing series around the Midlands (I'm in Leamington Spa) - either DH or XC? I'd just enjoy a bit of competition!

Any pointers would be great!

Fozzybear - when you say Dragon is the local DH to us, do you mean it's the closest series to the Midlands, despite being in Wales? Or have I found the wrong Dragon DH??..

closest series despite being in wales.
there used to be a midlands DH series which died when foot and mouth hit the area.

Unless you have done proper downhill courses before, I would stick to xc or enduro events.
Most downhill courses have huge jumps and steep, bumpy, technical sections, which would frighten most average mtbers. A strong downhill or all-mountain bike is needed. Most have 6"+ or travel front and rear.

Enduro events like the Merida series are good starting points as they will allow you to assess your strengths and weaknesses compared to other riders. You may find that you are slower on the climbs and faster on the descents or technical stuff compared to others.
