Got 3 different web based job searches being e-mailed to be daily, been to my main LBS, no luck! Also sent CV off to a Motorhome manufacturer, awaiting a response from them....

Jeez Capt, just reading that sent one of those scary shiver memories down my spine. Are you writing up yet?

Yes. Properly started today as it happens - took me ages to finish transcibing my interviews, but now they are out the way i can start the analysis proper. Probably going to finish some time between Christmas and Easter depending on my supervisors (and at the moment i hate them, but that is another story!).
I assume from your post you did one too?

Cazz no-one should have to suffer on benefits, but the job centre pushing someone to take a job that doesn't even pay all the bills, let alone have any left for food is wrong.
If I wasn't single and there were 2 incomes into the household than minimum wage would be ok, but as I'm single it isn't enough to live on, it's either no house, or no food.
I am not an extravagant person spending willy nilly, I don't go out much & only spend money when I have to, I have cut back on all of the superfluous expenses.
I didn't put a business plan forward as I don't have one, I just expressed the fact that I have a lot of experience with bikes & repairs etc, it was shunned instantly as a pipe dream.
Capt. Jon I agree, life isn't fair all of the time, you do get dealt crappy cards in the game of life!
I would have thought that the job centre would have maybe suggested some places to go for help if I wanted to go self employed, but no, nothing at all, just the routine Q's and paperwork.
Luckily I know a few people who are self employed, so they will be of more use than the official channels

Andy, benefits are not there to keep you in the standard of living to which you have become accustom. Perhaps some cut backs are needed.

I did, but then changed discipline after a couple of years. For me the writing up was the hardest stage, and it was such a boring topic I could get no-one to proof read it.

Er, I have made cutbacks, I have stopped my magazine subscription, I have changed my mobile to a cheaper company, I have energy saving lightbulbs throughout the house, I have the basic Sky Package, I drive a diesel car & do no more than 5000 miles PA, amongst other cutbacks, I do not go out on the beer every weekend, only on a special occasion, like a birthday or something.
I do understand that benefits are not to keep you in the same standard of living, that is not my point, especailly as I do not know what I will be getting.
My point is that I will be forced to take a job that will not pay the bills (œ150 per week just to keep the house running) and put food on the table, in the long run it could boil down to either starve & keep the house or eat & loose the house.
As I have said previously, I do not intend on living on benefits, I intend to get a job.

Has anyone ever read the forum on Martin Lewis's website? Some of the extremes people on there have gone to to save money - selling their cars and houses just to clear debts and have enough money to live, it's crackers!!

I don't want it to come to that!

Ditto, nearly lost my house at 21 through being left with a lot of debt and a mortgage I could barely afford. In hindsight I should've cut my losses and sold the house but I'm glad I didn't now.

Yup, getting back on the property ladder would be really hard, I only paid œ28500 for my house 9 years ago, it's now worth over œ70k, which means I would have to earn about œ20k PA to get a mortgage again if the worst happened, which it will not!

Never get value baked beans, it's always worth paying the few extra pence for better ones [;)]
And if you like pizzas it works out far cheaper to make you own from scratch, and if you're REALLY low on food, chipatis are great to make cos they're just flour and water [:)]

Yes, and they are even cheaper if you use tap water instead of Evian

Thing is if Andy is unemployed for a while he will be able to claim housing benefit (full amount of rent), council tax benefit (full amount of council tax) and unemployment benefit (don't know how much). This will add up to vastly more than a minimum wage job he could be forced to take, and would leave him better off financially than a lot of working people.
I know Kazoo would be better off on benefits than she currently is as a working mum, and when I move in with her full time we will realistically have just œ200-œ250 a month more to play with, which will cover my food but not a lot more

Don't mock my tips [;)] they came in immensely useful when for about 6 months I had a monthly food budget of œ20 (I blagged tea at my mothers house as often as possible!).

Not mocking, lived off of a large box of Weetabix for 2 weeks once when things were tight, had to have them dry to as there was no money for milk.

I was known to steal toilet rolls from the place I worked at the time too cos I was so flat broke. Amazing the things you'll stoop to when you're penniless!
