The high end of the latest range of bikes from Claud Butler seem to be doing really well in reviews (sub œ500 Cape Wrath D27 hard tail and œ800 Spectra Full Sus both have won group tests in the past few months) However, apart from these two recent reviews the brand never seems to get a mention..
Despite this I have recently ordered a Claud Butler Olympus XT (rrp œ1200) (details on www.falconcycles.ci.uk) through a bike to work scheme and together with the dealer discount this works out at <500 so exceptional value and payments spread over the year...The spec includes RS revelation fork, Dual control XT groupset and decent all round make up - so for me and at the price it is a no-brainer...just wondered why the general feeling out there is pretty ambivalent ? Is it because they have had a few barren years and only just begun to turn around or are their rrp prices just over optimistic ? Even at a discounted œ900 say I'd have thought the Olmpus XT was good value..?

i ve owned a claud butler rock for nearly 3 yrs,and although its an entry level bike i ve done 2700 trouble free miles on it including sometimes commuting to work. hopefully in the future i will be looking t o upgrade to maybe a cape wrath which always do well in the mag tests. the olympus xt looks a quality bike so i m sure you have made a good choice. yes claud butler does suffer from brand elitism , some people reckon that unless its a spesh, gt trek etc it aint going to be any good but i think they do make some decent bikes for the money.0

C.B's are very good value bikes, I have owned a couple (many moons ago!) and I have 2 friends with Cape Wraths (1* 'V' & 1* Disc)
I let my mate with the Disc version have a go on my susser round Dalby whilst I rode his Cape Wrath, I was quite surprised how good the bike was, if I didn't have a hardtail already I'd consider getting one, well worth œ500.

I have a cape wrath d27 and it rocks my socks. Admittedly it is my first 'proper' mtb so maybe i am just being delusional, but for the price i paid for it nothing else will touch it[:D].
...this is not to say i am no eyeing up a new bike for next year tho[;)]

The Cape Warth is indeed a fine bike, having said that I personally wouldn't consider any model under this. You have a very good deal on the Olympus which really makes it a no brainer buying wise, my reservations on CB go back to one of the first i owned, (an Oracle IIRC) which was a very unresponsive, despite a relativly decent spec for the time, maybe a dated view but can't say CB really inspire me to this day

I've got the Olympus XT, last years model I think and got it half price for œ600 off the internet after trying it out and others at my local bike shop, was well chuffed with it, the only difference is its got REBA's instead of REVALATIONS which still is a pretty damn good fork.

I bought the 05 Olympus XT last year, then swapped the frame for a Maxlight. The CB frame is a little generic and heavy and I think the rrp is a little high as the spec isn't as good as it looks. They make all the obvious parts XT, then use a lower spec crank and wheels. I've never seen any shop asking for the full rrp on an XT.

If you can't remember it, it probably happened!
