Free bikes

Worcester has put 50 bikes around the city for people to borrow. Can you remember how long the bikes lasted when Halfords did the same?

Whats the betting they're all gone by the end of the day.

Worcester might be quite posh and full of well behaved citezens... But yeah, what an incredibly stupid idea.

It may be posh but I bet few people won't be deterred from spending a few quid on a train ticket for a free bike.

Have you seen The Running Man? I think they have some sort of proximity sensor fitted to the bike which makes the riders head explode when it is taken beyond the perimeter! Now that's the kind of deterrent the Government needs to adopt.....

I think it's a good idea, you'd just need several thousand bikes to flood the market all at once and remove any value at all to disincentivise theft. Several thousand bikes could cost maybe several thousand pounds only - just bring a whole boatload over from China. Then repeat until people stop nicking them [:D]

But, I don't really see how freely borrowing a bike is completely workable. Say you pick one up to go to an out-of-town cinema and back. As you are leaving it outside, someone else wants to borrow it.....can you say "No it's mine" or what? OTOH I suppose we all share park benches without pushing each other off, so maybe it can be done....

Wonder how good the bikes are? Even at a modest 200 quid a pop, thats 10k of our money, and higher crime figures.

They tried to do this in Cambridge about 15 years ago - We're not talking weeks or days but hours they lasted on the streets.

I did hear that 1 one was found in New York a few years after it's disappearance [:)]

They probably spent more of that dreaming the idea up. Thats where most council money goes.

The whole story was only briefly mentioned on Central news.

The bikes are apparently 'recycled' by a charity so they're a real mix of styles. Generally they looked good quality but rather old.

Apparently Japan has a similar system with umbrellas. They are left outside buildings in stands for you to use if it's raining when you come out. If you ask why no one steals them you get a somewhat bemused ' but then there wouldn't be one there when you needed it!' by way of reply.

I think I'm living in far too selfish a country.

The evening standard adopts something similar to that in London. If it's raining they give a free umbrella with every paper bought
