I've seen the '07 COMMENCAL SUPREME 6.3 on Merlin for œ840 shipped (after discounts) and IMO this seems an absolute bargain.

The only things I am concered about is perhaps this is overkill for my riding, as I am hoping to start visiting a few trail centres soon such as Dalby and Wharncliffe, perhaps with the odd trip overseas. Would a Supreme be overkill?
Also is anyone familiar with Commencal sizing as the bike is only listed in sizes small/medium and medium/large. Which would be best suited to a 6'0" rider with a 34" inside leg?

* OVERKILL *
You answer your own question in your signature. I was in Dalby a couple of weeks ago as its my local trail. We came across these group of guys and one poor bugger was on a downhill bike and was almost pushing it most of the way sweating like fuk...I have a Commencal 5.5 and its perfect to go round on. Dalby is 25 miles long on the full red and you dont want to be lumping that around if your into trail riding. Get something that you can pedal about if your that way inclined or if your into downhill then thats fine.This bike weighs up to 37lbs without pedals
I have been to Wharncliffe a few times on trail bikes and its just as good fun rather than hoovering up the wood on a downhiller.You will be so limited with the Supreme as to where you can take it without huffing and puffing or using chairlifts. You really need to assess your riding needs * OVERKILL *

Hmmm...
All good points, I do like the lure of DH, but I'm worried I'll be too much of a ***** to do it properly or that it might limit my riding.
Perhaps I'm being seduced by the price? Thought I can't find anything comparable for trail riding for the same money. :-(

GT do a good range of cheap bikes FS. Pauls Cycles seem to be the place to pick up cut price GTi-Drives. I demoed a GTi-Drive 5-1.0 and i personally found it to be a great ride, amazing traction, the bike really digs down and grips plus the downhill stuff is just eaten up by the rear. Varying specs offer different weights and performance but the suspension design is the same. Ideal if you want to upgrade over a few years. What MTB did a review of the I drive and the Halfords specially made I drive won a bike budget test. Oh and my son has a 4-3.0 which i have ****ed about on a few times. œ650 from Pauls Cycles. Try and get a demo

Possibly overkill , I have done the red route at Dalby on my 38lb ruckus(in sig) I managed it and didn't push up too many hills(gotta love that 22/34 gear[:D]) , but it wasn't really a pleasant experience for the last 5 miles or so , I'd be tempted to look for something around the 30lb mark as I really noticed the extra weight over my xc bike on the same route , it al depends how strong you are and if you think you have the stamina to haul a big heavy bike about once you're over the 20 mile mark(the reason I bought something lighter!).
Don't get me wrong I love my ruckus but tend to use it mainly for freeride and downhill duties.

I was going to say, GT Idrive, some astonishing bargains to be had, and on paper better value than the commencal. Pity only small left, but this has some spec:

Not easy to test though from pauls.
