Hydration Packs - sucky, sucky.

edited June 2007 in MTB buying advice
Hi all,

i've done a search on this but it didn't seem to produce much of a list. so, i'd like to ask what hyrdation packs people use; how big they are (if not too much of a personal question), what you like/dislike about them and more importantly have you named it?[:)]

I'm after a pack for 1-2 hour rides which can carry tubes and the usual bike bits including a small pump and mac.

let me have it![;)]

Ive just bought a 2l camelback and was advised that i should think along the terms of 1l of fluid per hour. so a 2 hour ride would be fine with a 2l pack.

The pack also has 2 pouches in which i use for tools and a spare tube. There is also a netted bit for my pump.
  • cool.

do you know the model name of the pack?

For me the Decathlon packs offer the best value for money (if you are near one), half the price of their named counterparts and no difference in quality (yes I have had both)

  • Just bought a Gelert 2l pack ( couple of weeks ago ) from an Army & Navy type store - looks the real deal - cost..... œ14.99 - if you stuck a Camelbak logo on to it the price would have been around œ25-œ30 more! - See if I can find a link later.

    found it!

    clicky!

    I've got a camelbak mayhem, 3l water and 10l storage (I think), ~œ55, it's good.

Tesco get some OK ones in from time to time, but that Gelert one above looks fantastic for the money! Think I might get one for the Mrs.

Pah! The only time I've managed to actually go to a Decathlon and remember that I wanted to buy something was about 800 miles away in Barcelona one time.

They need to have an online shop...

  • I've got a North Face Megamouth, is 17L total capacity with a 3L bladder and the world's greatest bite valve (which clips to your chest strap with a magnet!). It's a little heavy for a 2/3 hour pootle but for a longer ride which involves taking waterproofs & food it's absolutel marvellous!

I also have a Da Kine Shuttle which is 6L capacity with a 2L bladder. It's got bugger all storage space in it if you want to carry anything other than a few tools and a waterproof (which would have to be strapped to the front) but is light and comfy to wear for a few hours pootling round the woods.

I've got a North Face Hammerhead which is the model down from Cazz's. 12L is perfect for a day ride with a fleece/waterproof and food and carries my camera no worries. Absolutely brilliant! That magnet is inspired too.

I also have the megamouth, but use a platypus bladder in it, as its easier to fill and the bit value is also very good and gives you a slightly higher volumne flow the the nalgeen one it came with. plus the quick release hose started to leak. But the magnet is great, only problem is it picks things up (like lock keys) and you end up going mad trying to find something you know you put next to your pack!!

With the Wiggle promo on at the moment I'm picking up some spares that I'm missing and thought I might grab a hydro pack to water myself and shove the spares into. I'm thinking of getting the Camelbak Mayhem. Any opinions about it?

    Where do I start..
I have 2 camelbacks, a basic one (very old) and a Mule. Don't like either the straps are a pain in the arse. Cant remember the brand of the third but it's pretty good (they make good rucksacks if thats a help) I got it from Blacks.
The Deutor one I have is splendid and I'll stick with this brand thanks.

OOOh...I want one that does that. Mine keeps hooking on to my handlebars when I least expect it.
I have the Camelbak magic. ( last years model got it in sale from Evans ) Its ok for a wee blast round Glentress but if you fill the 2l bladder right up its really overfull and uncomfortable. Not much space for anthing really apart from a spare tube, a flapjack, glasses, spare contacts and lipgloss![:X]

Just bought one as my original Mule wasn't quite big enough. I was impressed with the Mule, and am just as impressed by the Mayhem, 3 liters of extra storage compared to my Mule- which will allow me to get my jacket in and make carrying my camera easier as well. Bought mine in the browny camo colour, mainly as most mud seems to dry something like and it'll look cleaner for longer...
