Disc sizes
I made a post about discs earlier on but that doesn't matter.
The bike I will probably be getting has dart 3 suspension forks on it (06 Cape Wrath). Would Hayes HFX-9 8" disc rotors be too big and powerful? Would it be better to get the 6" XC version?

6" will be fine for XC, your forks will have a max rotor size too, which I suspect will be less than 8".

Yeah, thats what I expected. Would it be possible to upgrade to 7" (180mm) rotors with no problems? Maybe just on the front?

pysically yes. but you need to check the max disc size the forks are warrentied to.
