Another ride, another sodding puncture

Getting fed up of punctures, even with added kevlar tyre liners [:(!]. I mainly suffer from thorns and flint. Currently have panaracer cinders 2.25, 35psi front; 40psi rear.

Have been recommended to change to stans no tubes but the panaracer tyres seem to be a no-no. I have been told that Maxxis are the way forward but I have no previous experience of these tyres so am looking for a bit of advice.

I would welcome advice on both the no tubes and tyre choice.

  • Maxxis are brill tyres. You can get there tyres in dual ply which are very heavy but do stop pinch flats. I think this is not what you are on about though. So maybe DH tubes?

Stans is superb if you can be bothered to install it properly.

I succesfully used Fire XC Pro's but then swapped to High Rollers which were superb but I'm currently using Geax Barro in the wet conditons we've currently got but will swap back to the superb Geax Saguaro/Mezcal combo when summer finally arrives.

What liners are you using pikeymc?
Having been plagued by thorns etc, I've been using Mr Tuffy's for a few months with no issues or punctures (apart from the odd tube valve failure, so no relation to getting a puncture).

I run a cinder on the rear.
Im also getting fed up with punctures ( Almost every ride ) I have tried running high and low pressures
I think I might be changing tyre soon if it keeps up.
    What to replace with ?

  • I use the slime liners with panaracer fire xc pros 2.1 at 45ish psi and no punctures in last 200 miles and i was averaging 2 a ride before then.

budda, I was using the panaracer flataway tyre liner but have had both thorns and shards of flint get through the liner.

madmole, I've dropped the psi by 5 to improve the ride quality, the liners and a higher psi made it feel like I was riding on solid tyres.

I went to my LBS the other day and they handed me a rim with a tubeless tyre fitted and Stans latex stuff inside. They then handed me a scriber and challenged me to puncture the tyre. After sticking the scribe into the tyre 5 times or so I gave up.

    Stunning!

CRC do a small selection but I think they're all non-folding. I've bought TNT (Tube no Tubes) folding versions from my LBS who are selling them at œ45 a pair to Joe Public. Don't really see them around although I'm sure your LBS could order them in from Upgrade Bikes who are an importer/distributor.

Please bear in mind that my recommendation is based upon my own personal use with Stans, I have no idea what these are like with a tube stuck in them I'm afraid but with Stans they the best tyres I've ridden. I said the same about the High Rollers until I tried these but then again I'd be happy keeping the High Rollers on all year round where as I think I've now found my perfect summer and winter tyres.
