Garmin etrex personal navigator

Hi all, just wondering if anyone owns this gps, I'm interested in buying one, just wanted to make sure it could do the job I want.
Having read the specs on it there are a few things I am not clear on. I just wanted to know realy how many waypoints it can store per route. I would be using it as a back up aid during long multi-day off road rides, around 150-250miles, would it be able to store all the wayppoints for a route of this size (planning will be done using memory map, and then downloaded to gps)
Would I have to break the whole route into smaller sections "routes" in order to do this?

Hi, the unit I was asking about is the Garmin eTrex GPS Personal Navigator
https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=6403
I've seen different specs published for this, some say 1 route and 500 waypoints, others 20 routes and 500 waypoints, others still, 50 waypoints per route with 20 routes!
I'd just like to know what it can actually do and make sure it's up to the job.uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0 -
Geko 201 is better than the Etrex IMHO. The Etrex design is ancient.
Not sure how many waypoints, I tend you use tracks - I think it can take 2000 trackpoints over 5 or 6 tracks.0 -
I have the Geko 201 and eTrex Legend CX. I think my eTrex is loads better. Yeah but I think the Geko would be a bit more suited to your needs as a pose to the eTrex you were looking at. I am well busy now so I will explain what I mean later or (more likely) tomorrow.

The geko series has a smaller receiver in the unit due to it's smaller size. This also means that it does not pick up the signal as quickly. Just a thing to think about if your purchasing

Just read another set of published specs which say that the etrex can store 500 waypoints with 1 route of 50 waypoints!!!! Now I am confused, reckon I'll try and get hold of garmin.uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0

The stats listed in that link seem to be right off the top of my head, I've been selling these at work since they came out a fair few years ago but have very few problems.
However PLEASE NOTE THIS. If you are thinking about sending away for a US spec model, that Garmin Europe based in the UK may very well not do anything to help you if you have any problems. The have a 12 warranty and I sent a customers unit back for testing after 3 years and they still replaced it for me. However we also sent a US garmin back and they sent it straight back saying 'tell the customer to return it to it's original home market'
Just a word of warning but don't worry to much as I've only sent away about 4 units to Garmin in 10 years

No, I don't intend to buy it from the US, it can be bought cheap enough here. I dont need anything flashy or hi tec and this looks like it will do, just like to know if it can store enough waypoints for a single route of around 150-250 miles. If it can only store a single route of 500 way points then that would do, anything else I can enter from route cards before hand.uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0

No, the distance would be over 4-5 days dependent on the terrain, weather, time of year etc. I would like to use a separate route for each day, but I'm not sure how many routes the etrex will store. Also they may well be upto 50 waypoints per day and I need to make sure it will store that amount of waypoints per route, as I've read various descriptions and specs on this unit. As I wont have access to a PC whilst in the field and I'm not keen on entering dozens of grid refs by hand, it would be useful if I could just store the whole route.
The route I'm working on at the moment has around 400 waypoints so if it can store these as a single route then thats fine. I prefer map and compass for navigating, but would like to take a GPS along for ref/back up in case the weather closes in or I get myself well lost, I would like to do some fairly remote routes in Scotland next year and want to make sure my kit is up to it.uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0 -

Hi Wilko, thanks for the reply. How many routes can it store and how many waypoints per route?
Thanks for the help, pleased you are happy with the etrex.uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0 -
50 waypoints per route, only one route, however once you have completed it, can change waypoints. In this case it may not be good for your usage, but 50 waypoints is plenty for me

Thanks for that, I've also read it can store 500 waypoints, so after you have used up 50 for your route what happens to the other 450? Sorry if this seems like a dumb question. Cheers again for your info.
Just read a bit more info on it, I now understand what happens to the other 450...they are just waypoints stored for information and ref. doh!!uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0 -
you have a menu and you just press route, you then choose which way points you want to navigate through, in that order. It then basically points you in the direction of the first way point, once you have reached that, it moves onto the next one.

Just found out you can get an etrex (the cheap yellow one)with software version 3.00 (and above) relased Aug 2004 for just over œ100, whic can store 20 routes of up to 124 way points each!!! Any unit with software below version 3.00 cannot be updated to allow this as there is also some slight hardware changes which prevent this. It seems that all the cheap deals I've found are only selling the old 1 route/50 waypoint versions!!!uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0

looks like you're sorted mate! My dad bought his in '03 when he was in the gulf, that explains mine. The etrex is a great unit though, happy navigating!

Thanks a lot for the help..I'm all surfed out now..cheers buddy
Also, anyone looking to buy one of these as I understand it the units with version 3.00 software have WAAS...whatever the bloody hell that is!!!uttp://farm3.static.flickr.com/2453/3644058624_66a72402ee.jpg/]Hardtail0 -
WAAS = Wide Area Augumentation system
It is a land based carrier signal which will boost your accuracy to around 1m but use more battery power. WAAS is for use in the US. In the UK you will use the EGNOS system which is similar but not yet fully operational all over europe
Sounds like your sorted now
Enjoy
