How good are Hope hubs??

I have just begun building a lightweight XC hardtail and I have about œ150 for a set of wheels. I was going for XC717 rims with XT hubs but I have seen I could have a Hope pro II up front and a Hope XC Disc at the rear which totals œ181. I can stretch to this if they are worth it. So what do you guys think??

If your lazy get hope pro 2's or XC's....

if you like maintaining hubs get the XT....

If you like having the bike shop re-build your hub often get Hope XC. I think I was unlucky but on my Hope XC rear hub, in less than two years, I had two sets of bearings, two new freewheels and a new axle needed after failures. Total cost of œ116 on repairs on a hub! and thats with discounts from my LBS. Now trying Crossmax ST rear wheel.

Sorry for being negative, I just seem to have problems with breaking Hope stuff. I just don't think they like Yorkshire grit very much; may improve when I move to Chester.

I know where Fozzy's coming from with this one but I'm not sure I agree. I've got two bikes, one with XT hubs and one with Pro IIs. I wish they were the same age so I could give you an exact comparison but the ProIIs are only a year old. However, I stripped the XTs down for the first time in 2 years assuming the grease would be wrecked, rust coloured and the balls would need replacing and I wished I hadn't touched them. The grease was as good as new, as were the balls.

The seals on XT hubs are really good. My wifes bike had Deore hubs which looked identical, even the sealing. Even though she rides much less, I had to strip her hubs withing 6 months because they'd lost their grease.

I have 6 bolt XT hubs (not centrelock) and where the ProIIs do score over them is weight. If you can, I'd get ProII front and rearas the rear ProII weighs 100g less than the rear Hope XC. Should still be able to get them for œ199 (see Stif.co.uk, Merlin.co.uk etc.)

I've used Hope hubs on all my bikes for years, from Ti-Glide, Bulbs, XC to Pro II.

I've never had any issues in over 10 years. All have been used more or less daily (including through Scotish winters), and i'm very lazy when it comes to servicing them.

Yp pro II's for lazy people like me and fozz who also have water proof cables so no need to oil [:p] brill hub amnd you'll love the noise [:D]

Hmmmm, I like the fact I will save 100g over the XC hubs.

Cheapest I have found is some custom built wheels from Merlin œ211 [:o]

Yeah, I will be going with Merlin.

The XT wheels cost œ120 for the pair whereas the Hope Pro 2 are œ210 for the pair.

Are they that much better?

Those XT wheels are phenomenal value for money. XTR hubs are only slightly more than Hope Pro2, but weigh less, and IMHO the better hub. Seals and bearings are superb.

Hope bearing sets are less than a œ10 so even if you wear em out its a cheap 15 min job to service em and they are far better at clearing ramblers than XT

Having said that I still am using a set of XT hubs from 94, My XC Hopes have been perfect for 2 years now without a service, I've just built a set of 717?Pro2 so its too early to gauge robustness, ut they are lovely and light and feel great

I like the advantage of clearing ramblers but I really don't think I can justify œ90 on a 50g weight saving. XT all the way me thinks!
